I do not think that math should be used to determine the gravity of sin. You are not saying that such gravity is determined by numbers, are you?
Yes. Absolutely.

The systematic destruction of six million human lives is a crime that one cannot even begin to comprehend.

If so, how much worse is the systematic destruction of 54+ million human lives. (Or about 1.3 billion if you want to use worldwide numbers since 1980).

Frankly, it takes a pretty sick mind to perceive that abortion is less of a crime than the Shoah.

This in no way minimizes the horror of the Shoah. It simply places the horror of abortion in its proper context.

I know what the word “diminishes” means or I would not have used it. :banghead:

I still don’t understand your comment. From exactly where in my post are you are getting the idea of “moral superiority”?
When you say that the Bishop is diminishing the holocaust of WW 2 with regard to the Jews when he refers to the holocaust of abortion you are stating that killing 6,000,000 Jews is somehow worse than killing 54,000,000 unborn babies. If we are all equal then it would be impossible to diminish the holocaust of WW 2 by referring to other Holocausts.

Also Pope John Paul II referred to Abortion as a holocaust.

Bishop Conley’s article, despite its obvious flaws, is very interesting. I do wish, however, that he had not used an allusion to the Holocaust. It is inappropriate—as it usually is-- and diminishes the victims at Auschwitz and all other victims. “Stirring the pot” with such methods is beneath the Bishop, and unfortunately casts the Church in rather an unfavorable light.
It is the proper context.

To say otherwise diminishes the horror of abortion.

From CNS News:
Rev. James D. Conley, the Catholic bishop for the diocese of Lincoln, Neb., said the mainstream media, which usually pursue news stories that involve violence and death, largely ignored the gruesome story of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his “house of horrors” abortion clinic that was “reminiscent of Auschwitz.”

“Somehow, this story went largely unnoticed by mainstream reporters,” said Bp. Conley in his May 3 column. “One would expect a murderous doctor, running a ‘clinic’ reminiscent of Auschwitz, to face a media blitz and a burst of public outrage.”

“Instead, Gosnell’s trial has been treated as a low-key, local story,” said the bishop. “Pro-life advocates took up the task of publicizing it, using social media to make up for news outlets’ silence.”

Read +Conley’s original column here.
Once again an insulting and insensitive use of the Shoah. However, if the only possible comparison of abortion is to historical events involving the mass murder of Jews may I suggest a few alternatives: such as: "it was reminiscent of the Crusader massacres of Jews, or it was remininscent of Degenndorf (or of Jedwabne or of Kielce).

The numbers play a central role, if not then why is the comparison wrong?

Do you support abortion"rights"

I suupcet St Maxmiliam Kobe and St Edith Stein would not support your slam at Catholics in the above given their actions during the Holocaust.

Let me get this straight. You think that I said that “killing 6,000,000 Jews is somehow worse than killing 54,000,000 unborn babies”. And, based on this understanding of my post, you think that my point is that a Jewish life is more sacred—“morally superior”?—than an unborn life. I hate to tell you, but you are way off the beam. But, forget about me for a second. Let’s go to the ”judge” on this one, Johnny:

My, oh, my! Looks like the Holy Father and I are of the same opinion!

“Universalizing the tragic period, the Cardinal declares: “The shoah is a genocide like the other genocides of the 20th century.” But at the same time he acknowledges that “There is something special about an idolatrous construction against the Jewish people.”

The cardinal says Nazism hold a special place in the annals of totalitarianism because of its emphasis on racial purity and its placement of race on a higher plane than the divinity.

“The ideals of a pure race are the idols upon which the Nazis formed themselves … Every Jew that was killed is a strike against the living God in the name of the idols,” he says. “The devil was present in the idols which eased the human conscience.”

Any questions? 🙂

So, quantity trumps quality (of sin) every time? Hmm. Perhaps you too should read Pope Francis’ feelings about this issue. (See my response to JMJSHJ.) I repeat that abortion is “a” holocaust but not “the” Holocaust. Even the Church believes that the word “holocaust” should only refer to the extermination of the Jews during WWII. See the red print:

revisionistreview.blogspot.com/2011/02/word-holocaust-to-be-removed-from.html

The fact that a number of you have used the term “Shoah” leads me to believe that you are in accordance with what I–and the Holy Father–are saying.
Frankly, it takes a pretty sick mind to perceive that abortion is less of a crime than the Shoah. .
Now, markomalley, this is a Catholic forum. It is implied that we must post with honesty. With this in mind, I ask you: Are you saying that because I “perceive that abortion is less of a crime than the Shoah” (so you say), I have a “pretty sick mind”? “Tell the truth and shame the devil!"

Touché, chosen people. Thank you for your perspective. As for myself, I did not take your post as an attack against Catholics. We all need to appreciate our neighbors’ viewpoints with regard to these matters, which has been my point all along.

Yes.

Where do you get off acting as a judge of what a Bishop can say in regard to abortion by making a comparison to another holocaust of WW2?

You have no moral right to say its inappropriate and you are completely wrong to say that abortion somehow diminishes the victims at Auschwitz. It is not beneath the Bishop to say this and considering that the 4th Commandment extends to Bishops you could even be guilty of sin.

Finally, I asked what I asked about moral superiority because when you said that referring to abortion as a holocaust diminishes the victims at Auschwitz, I asked myself why you would say such a thing. Why does referring to the Holocaust of abortion somehow diminish the Holocaust of the Jews?

Whoa! Calm down there! Let’s talk rationally.

Now, the whole purpose of the “News” forums is for people to voice their opinions about issues in the news, correct? This thread was started to ask people what they thought of the Bishop’s remarks. You found no fault. I did. Period. End of story. If you want to call a person with an opinion a “judge”, so be it.

Sorry, JMJSHJ, but I have as much right as you do to say what I think is inappropriate or not. That you do not agree with what I have to say may anger you, but we all must expect both cheers and jeers for what we post.

I am not going to belabor my point about comparing things to the Holocaust. Pope Francis has already spoken for me.

Finally, it is YOU who has no right to accuse me of some “let’s pretend” sin.

As horrific as the Concentration camps were, they came during a war even more horrific. Our abortion policy is more like that eugenics policy of nazi scientists, and involves indiscriminate and cold-blood killing on a massive scale. As a legal institution it is more like black slavery. As a matter of cold, calculated self-interest, it can be defended. But its fundamental injustice is so obvious that we must be blind not to see it.

How does that prove your position?

I do not see a way to defend even the cold self-interest.
Simply because eventually the evil will begin to feed upon itself.

But otherwise, I find agreement here.
