Thank you all for your contributions to the topic. I have read and taken note of each of them. Yesterday I could not wait to get started. I am glad I decided to ask for advice because, today, after reading your posts, I am not so sure.
I am thinking Essential Oils can wait for now 🙂

The same goes for opium and coca.

If an herbal preparation is strong enough to be medicinal, it’s strong enough to cause harm, and with any medicine, one should be concerned about dosages.

Oil of wintergreen is very, very dangerous.

“The oil is UNSAFE to take by mouth. Taking wintergreen oil or large amounts of wintergreen leaf can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, and confusion.”

“Children: Wintergreen leaf and oil can be poisonous for children. Taking 4-10 mL of wintergreen oil by mouth can be deadly. Don’t even use wintergreen oil on the skin of children less than 2 years old.”

webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-783-wintergreen.aspx?tiveingredientid=783&activeingredientname=wintergreen

4 mL is NOTHING–it would be so easy to fatally overdose a child.
Well of course . Everything is dangerous if used in the wrong way ,even carrot juice , even RELIGION ,but people still follow blindly .

What I said there , was in reaction to me being 'reported for telling someone who was ill , how certain very precise oils and one herb had made my health much better .
It was in context . I always think, in context .
I would always advise someone only to go to a reputable shop etc. . Being cautious is good , being in denial is not .

I think that there is a cultural thing here . I would never ever give this kind of thing to a child ,I don’t know anyone who would .We are very cautious, and use oils externally ,and herbal teas internally .

You have a point there. 😃
So then all the claims we read about are all bogus?
I wouldn’t say they’re all bogus.

I think maybe in the days before medical science people used naturopathic medicines because there was no alternative, and whatever results they got were the results they got. People’s expectations were different.

Of course, they also did things like whiten their teeth with bleach.

One really cannot assume common sense on the internet.

Bear in mind that in the US (as well as probably some other places), essential oil sales are done as part of multi-level marketing schemes, and hence there’s enormous financial and social pressure on sellers to sell the stuff, and the sellers may not be aware how dangerous the products can be.

Also, the the multi-level people that push it in the US are encouraging internal use of essential oils, as well as the use of undiluted oils, both of which are dangerous practices.

There’s also a lot of over-promising.

“Earlier this week, the FDA sent letters to Young Living essential oils and its spin-off/competitor doTerra over misrepresentation by its distributors on the healing and preventative properties of their essential oils. In the case of Young Living, the FDA listed three of its distributor sites that claimed Young Living essential oils could prevent or cure the deadly Ebola virus…”

Essential oil marketing in the US (and probably elsewhere, too) is characterized by a lot of unethical behavior.

Also, while a lot of everyday items are dangerous in large doses, essential oils can be fatal in tiny doses–like the 4mL I mentioned upthread for oil of wintergreen. I give my toddler 5mL of infant pain killer fairly frequently–unless I had specific information about the dangers of oil of wintergreen it would never occur to me that 4 mL of it could be at all dangerous.

I would be happy to give you advice! Save your money.

There are very few miracle or quick cures for anything. I’m sure we could make a list of all the cures that were going to solve all of our problems over the last 50 years:

Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Vitamin D (currently en-vogue)
Acai berries
blueberries
Kale
Zinc
coconut oil - while I think has many good uses - doesn’t cure everything
fish oil
Chondroitin
the entire concept of homeopathy
chelation therapy
anything with magnets
Green coffee extract
leaches
blood letting

And just to bring things full circle - Snake Oil

I know there are more but this is what I came up with off the top of my head.

Just for fun:

Here’s a comedy sketch entitled Homeopathic A & E. (In American, that’s Homeopathic ER.)

And yet modern medicine and antibiotics have cured everything.
Of course not, nor will it ever. It sure has done wonders though! Life prior to antibiotics was pretty miserable for a lot more people.

Thank you THP!
Yes, I have seen snake oil on the shelf in beauty shops and I reasoned that since they are there and continue to be stocked, there probably is a demand for them. Strange!
