My boyfriend who is unbaptized is going in for a heart Cath in about 2 hours. He wants to become Catholic and join RCIA but it’s too late this year. Would a heart cath constitute a situation where an emergency Baptism can take place? Also, he would rather a priest Baptize him so would one come and baptize him?

Given the time constraints, why don’t you ask the hospital to call a priest for you? They would be better able to answer yours and your boyfriend’s questions.

I would call a priest asap or see if there is a chaplain in the hospital. I do not know the rules, but I thik under these conditions it wpould be allowed; My prayers will be with your boyfriend and everyone in his life… God Bless you.

I pray God protects your boyfriend’s life and health and may he be rejoined in full strength with you and your loved ones!
God bless him.

The hospital staff can likely help in contacting a priest, as there is often one on-call as part of the chaplain service.

I just called a priest at my parish (and where he goes with me). They don’t think this constitutes a danger of death at this point but if anything happens they will come up and Baptize him. They daid it would be better for his soul to go through RCIA and prepare for Baptism if at all possible.

You’ll have him back after the surgery…And you’ll have him baptized soon after that 🤣

Not sure if a heart cath is a grave situation. My understanding is that it is a test to find out if there are any problems.

Can. 865
§2 An adult in danger of death may be baptised if, with some knowledge of the principal truths of the faith, he or she has in some manner manifested the intention to receive baptism and promises to observe the requirements of the christian religion.

I think it is possible depending upon the bishop, but not likely. There are three types of baptism: water, blood, and desire.

Catechism
1259 For catechumens who die before their Baptism, their explicit desire to receive it, together with repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive through the sacrament.
Latin Canon Law
Can. 860 §2. Except in a case of necessity or for some other compelling pastoral reason, baptism is not to be celebrated in hospitals unless the diocesan bishop has established otherwise.
Can. 863 The baptism of adults, at least of those who have completed their fourteenth year, is to be deferred to the diocesan bishop so that he himself administers it if he has judged it expedient.

Not to worry, since he expressed the wish to be baptized, he is covered by “baptism of desire” if anything should occur, but my guess it will probably be fine in view of the procedure and the priest declining to come out.

Praying for him and you!

He’s in there now. He specifically told me after reading all replies that he definitely wants to be Baptized and become Catholic and wants to marry me in the Church the right way. I’ll update more when the doctor tells me whst he found and did.
Short version of what happened is 3 todays ago he left work doubled over with chest pain. Yesterday he had a myoview test for his heart that was abnormal and the Dr wanted to do the heart Cath asap so it was scheduled first thing today.

Just saw him in the OR after talking with the dr…They let me tell him.
He is getting a stent now and they are going to try and let him live with meds and two other blockages on a branch next to the LAD (main artery) but if the meds don’t work he will need a bypass…They can’t stent those two or he will have a widow maker heart attack which is 98% fatal.

We will keep praying for you!

I "liked " your post above to show support, not because I am liking that your fiance is sick obviously. …but sounds like the medical team has a good plan.

YES it would, but TRY calling for a priest ASAP

May God guide your path

First, as close as you are to the Lord, do try very hard to draw even closer to Him. I note that you are focusing on the worst case scenario. Look up! See a loving, merciful God! Several times now I have had to abandon my life into God’s hands. Each time that I trusted Him, He handed my life back to me.

98% fatal? I laugh at those odds, being told by a doctor 2 months ago that I had a 0.5% chance of being alive today. Forget the statistics - they apply only to populations and not to any individual on earth. He is an individual, and the Lord determines his survival curve.

from what i understand; an emergency baptism can be performed by a member of the laity

sprinkle water on your BF and say " I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit…"

done deal
