The table of contents, what else?
I don’t think you answered the question, but in the spirit of fairness and assuming the best of a person, I will uphold my promise to answer likewise:

I too believe the table of contents in my particular Bible lists for me the inspired Scriptures. It would appear that we both rely on an extra-Scriptural source for how we know which books are the inspred Word.

So, in the spirit of sola Scriptura, where in Scripture does one go to to test this table of contents to know for certian that it truly lists the inspired Scriptures? I have not been able to find any such listing in the actual Scriptures…can you help me?

I know. That’s why I remain in it. 😉
In my past, I was protestant. Today, I am unhappy with the errors taught by many protestant churches. The one that affects me today was the teaching on contraception. 20 years ago, I decided to become sterile. That decision bothers me today - not because I want more kids today - but because I an now unable to live as God intended (being open to life within the context of my marriage). Before that, the pill was used for a couple of years. Given the abortive nature that the pill can have, maybe I actually have more children that were killed by my errant behavior.

From the start, Christianity opposed contraception. It was not until the mid 1900s when protestant denominations decided to teach it was acceptable. (The very first breach in that dam was in the 1930s.)

For many denominations of the Christian faith, the gates of hell has indeed prevailed. 😦 And, while most Christian denominations are opposed to abortion today, there are a few (at least one that is large) that teach the acceptability of human-induced abortion.

It is an important question. But I can understand you do not have an answer. Indeed many simply have not thought about this question. So I can understand.

I will leave you though with it -but do not want to go back and forth in this fashion --please give it some thought.

If one is going to look to a written book in terms of the meaning of ones life and to guide ones life --it would be good to consider the question of why these particular books? How did this book come to be? How do I know this is the Word of God?

Why not other writings that I can find in the local bookstore in the Bible section? Why these books and not also the Book of Mormon which is claimed to come from a Divine source?

Why trust these books are the Word of God? Why not other great works by the Early Christians which indeed are very inspiring?

Why include say the Book of Revelation? Why the letter of James? (which Martin Luther was tending towards editing out of the picture calling it an epistle of straw…he ended up keeping it in the appendix along with Revelation and Jude --without page numbers) Why not just the Gospels? Some today do not like the Letters of Paul --so I imagine they leave them out.

It is very much an important question for one to consider. How do you know that say those 27 books that you find in most books called the “New Testament” is the Word of God?

Hence my question to you was how do you --William- know that these books are what is to make up the New Testament? That they are the Word of God.

I really do not want to guess at your answer --for I do not know you …

I have no doubt that they are – the question is for you to think about --how do you know??

God’s grace.
Wait…let me see if I understand this correctly. You know the books in the Bible are the inspired Word because the table of contents tells you so. And you know the table of contents lists the books which are the Written Word of God by God’s Grace.

Can you please explain how God’s Grace reveals this to you? I’m genuinely interested in how this comes about.

It’s been interesting, but this thread has lost its steam. :tiphat:

Blessings to you. I hope we can revisit the topic again someday…perhaps with more significant and serious answers. I truly hope you will take some time to consider Bookcat’s question. If you truly believe that God calls us to test all doctrines with His written Word, then it should be of paramount importance of any Christian to know for sure exactly how he knows he has the right books in hand.

To all:

I believe we have sufficiently proven that SS is self-refuting and fails when put to the test. In this thread we have seen ample evidence of the following:
  1. A proponent of SS cannot answer “how do you know that the books contained in the Bible are indeed the inspired Word of God” while still clinging to SS.
  2. A proponent of SS cannot solve this very real problem and still cling to SS: There are at least two camps of Protestant Christians in regards to OSAS. Both hold directly conflicting views of OSAS and both base their views on sola Scriptura. Using sola Scriptura, how is this conundrum resolved?
No doubt, we’ll see more 1-liners to attempt to snuff these truths. You’ll even get someone going off on some tangent…some wild goose chase or someone trying to lead you down several other rabbit holes in order to avoid the topic at hand. But you will see no significant or substantial rebuttal to either of these. SS simply refutes itself in the end.

Found something tonight which is *Germane *to the later part of this thread:

Give it up guys, Mr. William C has been banned from the forums. Look at his last post. Apparently you people pushed him into a corner and he had no way of escaping while staying within his theology so rather than admit that he had a problem, he resorted to smart-alecky retorts. In 13 days on these forums he posted 359 posts. Hopefully Mr. William C will take time to think on the questions asked of him here, the ones he never answered. Maybe he will find the answers off forum and hopefully those answers will be the correct ones.
