You can try and take it up with the diocese, but I doubt if you would get very far. I would change parishes and schools as soon as possible and immediately drop all your activities in your present parish.
I agree. You’ve done what you can and to no avail. Change parishes and (at least) schools.

OP, you might consider seeking assistance from The Joseph Foundation, for counsel as to what rights or recourse your family might have.

The Saint Joseph Foundation

Mission and Structure
The Saint Joseph Foundation is an association of the Christian faithful established in 1983 under canon 215 of the Code of Canon Law. It is civilly structured as a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the state of Texas. The Foundation has been ruled tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The Foundation’s primary purpose is to assist faithful Catholics in using the means established by the Church (the system of canon law) to obtain remedies for violations of their rights within the Church…
OP, I’m sorry to hear about your family’s ordeals and the pain you are all enduring. Remain prayerful, no matter what. I hope you will be able to meet with the pastor or with the Vicar of Clergy or Vicar General.

No matter what happens, I hope you and your wife contain your hurt and anger, and continue to love the Church as you deal with this situation and as you heal as a family. You need to help your children to get past this confusing, seemingly-unjust trial and to love the Church, for the sake of their future, for the sake of their souls.

I encourage you to contact this forum’s moderator to ask if you can amend your original post, so that you can remove some identifying information from it.

:popcorn:Sorry to hear about your troubles. First of all, they should have called Both parents in and spoken to the two of you and told you what happend, and why they were suspending your daughter for a day. The explaination your daughter gave to you about why it was in the backpack or where ever may verywell be the truth.
As far as the comment she supposdedly made to another student about wanting to maybe harm someone, that too should have been looked into. It’s one child’s word against another.Maybe the child who said your daughter made the remark has something against her or maybe not.The principal could have told you that they were thinking that maybe she should see a child pyschatrist. Alot of people make comments like they’d like to wring someone’s neck, but that doesn’t mean they are actually going to kill someone.
But they were suggesting this because they have to be careful because of all that is happening with kids and violence in schools.
Your pastor should never have taken your sons off altar duty. The boys have nothing to do with what happend with their sister. Also,he should be willing to meet and discuss this with you,not brush you off. You do have a right to know what’s going on.
Maybe through a church mediator the vicar, you and the priest can meet in his prescence and discuss this. If your pastor still refuses, then maybe go to the news.
Wish I had better advice for you.

I would be concerned that the parents had not been notified about the threat of violence as soon as it became known. I’d want to go to whoever withheld that information and encourage them gently to make such things known as soon as they become aware of them. You want people to know that you want to hear about stuff like that immediately, and you won’t be inclined to “shoot the messenger”. Get that reputation, and it can really come back to bite your family.

I agree that you should get to the bottom of this before jumping ship. First of all, a new school will request records from the old school and you don’t know what those records might contain. Secondly, it seems to me that there are holes in this story and you might not be aware of everything that is going on. (Not your fault, since you are having difficulty getting a meeting.) My suggestion is to continue demanding a meeting so that you can all be on the same page. You might want to consider bringing an advocate with you. This doesn’t have to be an attorney, but could be simply another neutral adult with a clipboard, who can take notes on what takes place and be a witness for what has been said. (This tends to make principals think about what they say a little bit more) If they won’t let you make an appointment, then go up there in person immediatly after school. (I don’t recommend going up during school hours.)

  1. No way is any school worth a damn going to accept an incoming student with a weapons expulsion on her record.
  2. Why did your four-year-old have access to a pocket knife?? Why did your 12-year-old handle that situation by putting the knife in her pencil box instead of taking the knife to an adult?? I have a sixth-grade daughter and she would never think to put a knife in a school-bound bag.
  3. This situation will follow your family to a new church and, if they allowed it somehow, school. With all the associated rumors and exaggerations.
  4. Have your kids had “issues” at this school before? Are you known as a difficult family? Has your wife made life hard for some teachers or ataff over the years? Were your boys trouble makers? I say this not to imply that any of it is true or to insult you, but just to get more clarity.

Yes! The family should not change schools or parishes without figuring out what happened. It’s much too disruptive for that to be the first solution. Not to mention that eventually you run out of schools…

Right! I would particularly wonder whether the boys had been goofing off and whether that was the reason they were removed as altar servers. These are kids–that could easily happen.

The original post title is “how do I deal w/ a vindictive Pastor?” I think that “vindictive” is quite a reach, given that we have no idea what is going on in these people’s minds. It might be more a case of “how do I deal w/ a cowardly Pastor?” or “how do I deal with an over-reacting Pastor?” or “how do I deal w/ a conflict-averse Pastor?”

I cant stand when an OP starts a thread and never comes back to fill us in on what happened.

Hypothetically
Regardless even if a child was “a child from hell”-so to speak-a Catholic school plus Father must handle things in Catholic manner involving prayer, self control, communication, compassion, dignity etc…
These things aren’t in contradiction with school safety.

Public schools might have fear-based reactions and overreactions, unwillingness to communicate etc but something should set Catholics apart and they handled it very poorly.

Yes, many concepts and advice about your family situation that will heal your Family from these minor events caused by evil and negativity.

Firstly, take the whole Family along to Reconciliation (including your 6th grade daughter) as quickly as possible. This will make it difficult for satan to attempt “its” works and at the same time more importantly, remove the guilt in your daughter for her original thoughts in relation to her friend (although all good now between them)! Pray for Father John the following:

“Dear God our Heavenly Father, please strengthen and enlighten Father John through The Holy Spirit everything in relation to our Family situation and involving our Grade 6 Daughter and all Families within our Parish, flowing Thy Divine Love and Wisdom through Father John and uniting him as “One” with You Dear Jesus Christ our Saviour now and for Eternity Amen” x 3 times followed by The Holy Rosary with your Wife, Daughter and Sons.
Do not forget to thank Jesus and Mother Mary for all of their Divine Love and Mercy for your Family unity and Blessings.

Secondly, remember Jesus being wrongfully persecuted by the government and other religious leaders (Jews) of His years, the degradation, humiliation and slander throughout His Life. Jesus forgave “They know not what they are doing” and apply all of Jesus’ aspects of His Life events to your Family’s situation, offering up all of your Family’s Crosses to God our Heavenly Father (including asking your Children to do the same) daily while praying. Jesus is then able to flow His Divine Love and Healing through to each member of your Family. Please mentally make Jesus Sign of His Cross towards Father John each time you see Father at Mass and ask your Children to do the same. This will heal all of your Hearts in relation to Father’s inaction and further, will enlighten Father of Jesus Love and Truth about the situation!

Love Thy enemies and forgive Thy enemies through Praying and Fasting as much as possible. Keep attending Mass; the whole Family! satan wants you all to be angry, not attend Mass, to crumble and destroy your beautiful Loving Family through one or two actions. You all know Jesus’ Love Light and Truth; never give in to “it”, you are a beautiful Family carrying out God’s most Loving Works, educating your Children through the Catholic System and having your Children receive all of their Sacraments, teaching them God’s Holy Scriptures, morals and values. Many of us have been in situations whereby we have endured false accusations and punishment for not doing wrongdoings. Pat yourselves as Parents on the back and Love yourselves for everything Holy within The Holy Spirit you are doing!

In the meantime, pick up The Holy Rosary Cards (the Church Presbytery), Rosary Beads (if you do not have them), Jesus Holy Cards and both Green and Brown Scapulas and Our Lady Mary’s Miraculous Medals (you can order these for the Family) placing all within your home and vehicles and in your Children’s schoolbags. You will notice the difference when you have placed all of these in each room of your home, including your Daughter’s room.

Ban any negatives in your Daughter’s life including the internet, facebook (if she has it), any negative programs (TV), music videos, the trash that many of our kids were allowed, replacing with sport, hobbies, interests, and all loving positive things. Perhaps she could join a Christian young womens association or charity groups that kids of her age belong to in order to meet other kids that she does not attend school with? If not already doing some of these things.

If you look closely at your Daughter’s spare time/hours, the answer/problem is there, where evil comes in through a ‘medium’ being a T.V. negative program, certain foods (junk), the internet, certain negative music, magazines, any type of negative medium. I discovered that my Daughter (now 22 yrs) was sneaking to watch revolting programs at a school friend’s house during her weekend visits when 12 years of age. Further, the music videos on t.v watched once a week were having an evil effect upon her for two years. By 15 years I knew exactly what had caused certain hassles in her beautiful heart. She was a ‘runner’ and kept up sports and athletics however some of these things could have been removed at a younger age keeping her mind healthier during those few years! I would be saying “no” to sleepovers unless her friends are visiting your home.

Love and best wishes to your Family

Stay within the School and Parish; the School Staff and Father John are learning from Jesus through your Family. Certain situations arise (regardless of whether positive or negative) in which certain Families and People in Catholic Parishes and Schools learn from one another and strengthen ourselves including Father John (Jesus’ Appointed Priest and Apostle).

Your Family and Yourself are Jesus Apostles also! Remind yourselves of this fact!

I forgive the Priest of my old Parish as a Teenager when doing Readings of Jesus at Mass each Saturday Night or Sunday morning. When my Parents separated, my Readings were cut off! I asked Father the reason. “Because your Parents as Catholics separated” was Father’s response. I never informed my parents whom had separated. I continued to attend Mass each weekend.

Years later in my 20’s I came back to my Country City and was to do Readings at a Girlfriend’s Wedding in another Church.

Take a guess who the Priest was at this Wedding (7 years later)?

I said “hello” to Father, informed him that it was me doing one of the Readings, co-incidentally, (Praise and Thanks be to Thee Dear Jesus Christ our Saviour for Thy Love Wisdom and Healing to my Heart and Soul), it was a Saint Matthew Reading (Saint Mark and Matthew’s Acts) I had loved during my Childhood, and in that moment I forgave Father.
I informed Father that my Parents were now back together.

He smiled with kindness.

We all, as Jesus Apostles, learn and wisen up about evil and the damage evil can do if we do not pray hard at the time for each situation and our reactions to each situation.

Love and best wishes

I am sorry to give conflicting advice to some of my fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ, however I need to make a couple of common sense points in relation to this temporary situation and I say temporary, given that this will soon be history.

If you change your Childrens School and Parish, what is this telling your Children (in particular what further damage is this going to do to your Daughter in future years)? She may later subconsciously feel guilt and responsible for the changes made (ie moving her Brothers/Siblings and Parents to another Parish and School). What negative impact will this have on your Sons with changes made? What is this telling your Sons when the going gets tough during certain periods in their Lives? Further, this is not educating other Apostles of Jesus (Father John and School Staff) at the same time!

I strongly advise the continuity of attending Mass weekly as a Family, continue your Daughter and Son’s education through this School and send your Daughter through to High School with the friends she has now in the Catholic System for Jesus’ Love and Wisdom flowing through your Daughter, for her stability, Catholic teaching continuity and at the same time, your Sons will get back to normal school Life with their Peers and Teachers next Term.

In other words, let it all go, continue on as normal, praying for Healing and praying for Jesus Love Light and Truth, Wisdom Comprehension and Compassion for your Family by all of those involved with the restoration of normal Life returning now!

What an inspiring story! It is so hard to take a hurtful action and just forgive, remain humble, and not let it affect our faith.

I loved the recent remarks from Pope Francis that the way of Jesus is always the way of meekness and humility, even when we are thinking that “this time” there’s another way.

I agree with your other points, that changing schools is not the best thing the OP can do for his daughter.
I cant stand when an OP starts a thread and never comes back to fill us in on what happened.
I tend to agree. Obviously in this case the OP has a lot happening at home at the moment, but I have watched this thread for a couple of days and had decided not to comment until the he returned.

These were my questions as I read the OP’s first post. Why is the knife in possession of the younger brother in the first place (if it was) and why did the sister choose to put it in her pencil bag and take it to school? Sounds like a story to me. And then we hear that she made a comment to another student about wishing she were dead…Well the knife being at school after that would ratchet things up a notch or two. I think there is more to this than the OP either knows or wants to tell us.

At the very least, she needs to know that the story is something about which a reasonable adult would be right to have real concerns, if their job is to keep a school safe.

OTOH, I remember when our sons had a friend who was kind of a bully who would give advantages in his “club” if, as our sons chose to put it “you let him cut you.”

Cut you?!? Well, upon further conversation, it turns out that this kid was conning the other kids into letting him take cuts in line. He had a self-serving little racket going, but he wasn’t interested in drawing small samples of blood from his classmates for his own gory amusement.

Still, if a teacher had heard the kids describing what they did, of course there would be some serious questions, because putting nicks into someone else because “bleeding is cool” or something like that was hardly beyond the realm of possibility. I have never heard of a 4th grader literally murdering a classmate at school with a pocketknife, but a desire for vengeance and a small blade could absolutely cause some terror and mayhem, all the same.

The child has been expelled from this school. Telling the parent to continue to send her to a school where she is not enrolled seems rather weak advice?? Am I missing something? Didn’t the original post say she was kicked out of school permanently? Not only that, but they didn’t even let her finish out her last few weeks of the school year. Pretty harsh.

Further, the parents have attempted to speak to the principal of the school and he refuses to talk to them. He has indicated this is a closed matter.

Either they send her to another Catholic school, enroll her in public school or home school her. Or they can spend the summer trying to move this up the chain of command in their diocese. But in the meantime, they had better figure out where she is going to be schooled come September.

I’m still kind of puzzled as to the title of this thread…

The daughter supposedly takes a knife away from her 4 year old brother either at school or at home and then brings it to school…And this connects to a “vindictive” pastor how???

It is as though the OP has turned this into a problem with the pastor when the base problem is with his children.

I think that no matter what the child did or how she did it, or what happened, the parents deserve a meeting with the principal to understand the situation, even if the situation can’t be resolved in a different way.
Does this mean that the child doesn’t finish the year and won’t move on to 7th grade? How long is the expulsion for? 1 year, this year, next year, what? Will she be allowed to return in September and in what grade?

And I also think that that the priest needs to meet with the parents and at the very least let them know what is going on. Doesn’t matter if things can change or won’t change etc. the parents have the right to understand what has happened to their children.

If the principal continues to refuse to meet with the parents, I’d have a lawyer make the appointment.
I can’t imagine that the priest can refuse to talk to the parents if they are members in that parish. Boggles my mind.

The parents need to figure out what is best for their children, how to move on and how to get their children educated, and where to do that. And where they want to go to mass. Changing parishes for a family can be a huge deal, esp. if they’ve been at their present parish for years.

It’s a tough situation. But once everyone understands everything, it might be a bit easier to to deal with.

Well, yeah. Transferring to another Catholic school is probably going to be impossible, so they need to get in touch with their meighborhood public school STAT to see if they will accept her (they will, but possibly only at a special continuation school for troubled youth.) The other option is homeschool or independent study.

This situation is bizarre. Starting from the preschooler with a knife that got taken by a 6th-grader and put into a pencil bag instead of given to an adult.

I think when using the term “vindictive” to describe his pastor, the OP was referring to what happened to his sons in the aftermath of this. Unless the boys are personally guilty of something, it seems very unfair to “punish” them for their sister’s (or parents’) actions. This seems like a case of guilt by association. I think this is what the OP was referring to by calling his pastor vindictive. That said, I think vindictive is the wrong word.
Something isn’t right about that situation. I can’t imagine any pastor punishing the family for something that was a mistake. That’s what makes me think that there is more to this than the OP is either telling, or knows. It seems that there might be more information than we will ever have access too.
