Do you have to prove to this person that you do not trust something or someone? That sounds like a stupid request.

He posted a survey run by the Catholic University of America and commented upon by Fr McBrien and reported in the National Catholic Reporter. It all sounds legit to him. In this other room anti-Catholics do post and ultraliberal Catholics too. I try to defend the church as best I can but not always successful. Especially when the attackers are using Catholic sources.

why not ignore the newspaper report, and the comments by those including Fr McBrien who commented on the survey, and go directly to the source, in this case CUA, and review the results as reported in peer review journals of whatever discipline conducted the survey

I think PuzzleAnnie is probably right in that it would be best to stick with the survey as is rather than through the lens of McBrien.

That said, your mistrust of McBrien is not misplaced. His seminal work Catholicism has caught criticism from the bishops themselves. Even after being given multiple opportunities to clarify and correct things through subsequent editions, he has refused to do so.

Here is the USCCB report:

In another room I am in a liberal Catholic quoted a survey commented on by Fr Richard McBrien. I commented that I never trust surveys and don’t trust him. He challenged me to show other results. I have seen them but don’t save them. Can someone support me with different surveys in my opposition to him? And, no, I never read the National Catholic Reporter.
What specifically is it you are looking to refute?

Although i will admit to having been drawn in on heated discussions at the NC Reporter page on numerous occasions, i now try to avoid this. While attepting to hold up the banner of The Church and defend her against the attacks of the heretics and the poorly catechized, i find myself getting too angry at the poster as opposed to the idea posted. An occassion for sin. What does work is to simply post links to Church Documents that refute the ideas being argued. Let the Fathers and Popes speak for the Church.
