So I recently remembered a mortal sin I commited in the past that I never confessed (because I forgot I did it). I am unable to go to confession before Sunday Mass. Can I still recieve the Eucharist in this state. I have no mortal sins I am aware of other than this past sin. I know I am forgiven of it but I also know I have to confess past unconfessed sins. Please help!

My understanding by priests and apologists is as long as you did not deliberately not confess this sin and you sincerely forgot it, then all sins have been forgiven. You may receive our Lord. However, it is recommended that next time you go to confession tell the priest about it. You are not the first one that has forgotten to confess a sin. It happens. Remember the words of absolution “… I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, etc.” The priest does not say he absolves you only from the sins you have remembered.

I agree with Nate. If you didn’t deliberately withhold that mortal sin, then you were forgiven when you made your confession, and you can receive communion tomorrow. But you should mention it at your next confession.

Thanks guys. Im alittle scrupolous but I think Im improving. Just wanted to make sure.

I would simply refrain from receiving until I made my next confession. Erase all doubt.

Keep it simple. Don’t complicate it.

That is being too scrupulous. Our sins are forgiven as long as the omission was NOT deliberate. If Didier wants he can go ask the priest before Mass and he will undoubtedly agree with me and with MrZoom. po18guy, please do prevent Didier from receiving Our Lord . po18guy and Dedier, please see this Forgiveness of Mortal Sin | Catholic Answers and this If I forgot to confess a mortal sin, was it forgiven? | Catholic Answers
It should settle the question and give Dedier peace of mind.
God Bless.

Sorry po18guy , I did read your words. Those last words you typed ”Erase all doubt .

Keep it simple. Don’t complicate it.”

That is coming through as a suggestion as to what he/she should do. Sins are forgiven and one is able to receive our Lord.

Now you seem to place doubts in Dedier’s head by saying “And, what if he sorta kinda meant to forget that sin in confession?”

Didn’t you read what Dedier wrote? Dedier struggles with scrupulosity but I think YOU are complicating things for him/her. Dedier came here admitting he/she FORGOT to confess a sin and now you seem to be indicating that Dedier forgetting a sin “might” have been deliberate. Now you tell me who is judging. I believed him, MrZoom believed him. I have given him links as to what do to when one FORGETS to confess a mortal sin. Please let Dedier read and take it from there.

This is my last post on this thread.

God Bless you po18guy and Dedier

So what are you going to do? You have conflicting advice on the thread. This is why a scrupulous person should not post about these things and should have a trusted spiritual advisor and a well formed conscience.

And, what if he sorta kinda meant to forget that sin in confession? God knows his heart.

What then?
It’s this kind of thing that sends a person suffering from scrupulously into a nightmare of anxiety.

@Didier please consult your priest, not people on this forum. Believe me, posting here is terrible for scruples — nothing good can come of it.

Been to confessin since this was committed? Yes? Then it has been forgiven.
I never confessed (because I forgot I did it)
We are expected to confess all mortal sins that we have remembered at the time of confession. Those we’ve remembered and have the intention to confess, to ask forgiveness, are forgiven. So at that time and any confession since then, if you had remembered it, you’ve would’ve confessed it- yes? Didn’t deliberately withhold confessing the sin-no?
I know I am forgiven of it
Good!
I also know I have to confess past unconfessed sins.
True - but as it was forgiven with all the others (in the first confession after committing this sin - which you forgot to mention at that time and in any other confession since then, but only remembering now, so there is only the obligation to mention it at your next confession.

Do you go to confession 2-3 weekly, or perhaps monthly? Then when you next go, make sure to mention it at this next confession.

You can therefore be confident of being an invited guest to the banquet of the Lord - so you may receive Holy Communion at Sunday Mass.

Edited to add link:- What if I forgot to confess a sin and remembered it later? Was it absolved?

Baltimore Catechism Lesson 19 Q.794 " May a person who has forgotten to tell a mortal sin in confession go to Holy Communion before

going again to confession?

A. A person who has forgotten to tell a mortal sin in confession may go to communion before again going to

confession, because the forgotten sin was forgiven with those confessed, and the confession was good and worthy."
