Didn’t they cover the topic in your marriage prep classes? If not, ask at your parish for them to recommend clsses in your area.

Congrats on your upcoming marriage!!!

p.s. not to scare you, but you can’t learn enough about NFP in a week (especially when it will probably be a very busy week, lol.) So I really hope you and your fiance would welcome a “honeymoon baby”😉

I would TOTALLY welcome a honeymoon baby!!! In fact I pray for it! (I will be 40 this year and Chris will be 45!!!)

They only mentioned NFP briefly in our Pre Marital Counseling… I am wondering if someone can recommend a good Catholic book on the subject. 🙂

I will pray for you!

It is sad…I keep hearing stories where marriage prep classes either do not mention NFP at all, mention it so briefly that you wonder if they really did, or actually bash it and tell everyone not to use it!

I don’t know a Catholic book, but the one I started with (and found really easy to understand) is called “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” by Toni Weschler.

If you ignore the parts where they suggest using a barrier method on fertile days, it will give you a good base of knowledge.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I just finished reading Taking Charge of your Fertility and found it very informative. I am taking a Creighton Method NFP class so I’m not charting my temps, but this book went into so much more detail than the workbook for our classes. Although the classes are great because we can ask questions and it’s one-on-one instruction.

Congratulations on your marriage!
I recommend the Creighton Model of NFP. You will need to take classes, but they are well worth it - be sure to go to the follow up sessions too - especially if you want to try right away. It will help you get pregnant faster!

Congratulations Carolyn. I just got married August 6th! I am 38 and my husband 44. So, I would like to recommend the Creighton Method (CrM) to you. www.fertilitycare.org and www.creightonmodel.com

This is a mucus only method, and is super easy, which I love. You also get personalized instruction from a certified Creighton teacher.

At our age, fertility issues could arise trying to achieve pregnancy. The Creighton Model is used by Dr. Hilgers at the Pope Paul VI Institute (www.popepaulvi.com) . Actually he developed the Creighton Model while at Creighton University. The PPVI center developed NaPro Technology that has allowed many couples to become pregnant (and in keeping with Church teaching). They will consult long distance if you send them your charts. That’s one of the reasons I chose Creighton.

I agree that you could start reading up on it by getting the book TCOYF, but not everything in that book is in line with Church teaching (ie, they recommend barrier contraception during fertile periods).

Best wishes on a long, happy, and fruitful marriage!

Carolyn,

Good advice coming from all. My wife and I teach for the Couple to Couple League, and you can find a local teaching couple at www.ccli.org ]. Women who are more “mature” when getting married and looking to have children have a few more fertility issues to consider, and the correct practice of fertility tracking will be helpful as you seek to achieve a pregnancy.

The Couple to Couple League teaches a Sypto-Thermal method of NFP that incorporates the temperture sign in addition tracking your mucus signs. CCL also distributes a book, “Fertility Signs and Nutrition”, by Marilyn Shannon, that will be helpful should you have any difficulty achieving pregnancy. My quick advice would be to limit your sugar intake, and wean yourself off the caffine. If you are a Diet Coke lover, switch to the Splenda version, and try to lower your intake.

Enlist the assistance of St. Gerard as you prepare for your nuptials, and ENJOY the excitement!

Congratulations and may God bless your union with fruitfullness!

congratulations and best wishes. DD began instruction in NFP 6 months before the wedding so she would be in the groove. However, we nickname our first granddaughter Minnie Mouse because they went to Disney on their honeymoon. You need more than a book, you need help and support and practical guidance from couples who are also doing NFP. Couple to Couple league, ccli.org, and face-to-face classes in your diocese, call your diocesan family life office if your marriage prep did not refer you. Hate to say it but a book can only take you so far (that goes for raising kids when they come along, too).
