Ok guys I need a bit of assistance here. I am located in the Yakima Diocese in Washington State and attend St. Josephs Church in Kennewick. The area is split down the middle by the Columbia River one side is Yakima and the other Spokane Diocese (Spokane being 2 hours away). Of the Churches in the area in both diocese my parish is the only to offer the EF Mass. We have really been blessed by two brother priests (literally) who are retired and getting up in age who travel the surrounding area and offer the EF Mass only. Its really amazing the distance they travel to have these Masses said while being probably in their 80s and retired!
We have at the parish a pretty good size group of folks who attend the EF regularly as its offered here 3 times a month in the chapel. The group is fairly young the average age is probably 35 with a few hold overs
. So along with this group I believe it really has kept our parish rather traditional in both the EF and the OF. I’m pretty involved with the both sides of the house and honestly folks from both sides of the river drive to our parish to attend both the EF and the OF because it has remained very conservative. I take this as a great thing.
So on to the meat of this all…The EF said here is a very Low Mass. As one could imagine there just are not very many people who can sing Gregorian chant or know how to serve so its a silent EF. The folks who attend are just dying for some music! SO a few of us are starting to put our feelers out to see if we can get something going but we really don’t know where to start.
We would like to see if we can get a High Mass said on occasion with music. Also to develop some dialog with priests who still say the EF as our brothers are not going to be around forever. To my knowledge they are literally the only priests in the area who even know how to say the EF. I fear that if we don’t start looking soon and determining cost and feasibility that this aspect of our community might go away when the brothers are no longer able to do this for us. This would be a really sad thing. So this isn’t about just having music sung but exposing our parish to a High Mass and setting a foundation for it to be said here.
Now I’ve done some preliminary research and it looks like the closest place that offers a Latin Mass is the Spokane Diocese across the river and 2 hours away. Spokane (city) being a pretty large area. I know there used to be some orders up there that said only the EF and offered the High Mass. Is anyone here reading this located in the Spokane area and affiliated with any Church that offers a high Mass? Maybe someone that works for the diocese? Seattle is also about 3 hours away which has most of the orders who say the EF i.e. FSSP etc…So if you work for either of these diocese (Seattle. Spokane) or have any connections that I could contact to see how to proceed forward please let me know.
