rev kevin,

I think the point is, don’t plagiarize. If you copied and pasted from some other source, give them some credit.

Unless you’re suggesting these are your words…

google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=%22Faith+is+a+word+with+many+meanings.+It+can+mean+faithfulness.%22&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
Sorry to disapoint but I gave my source. I did not, and I repeat, I did not get it from any site they you claim I did so they get no credit. I can’t help it if you cannot accept where I got my info from. Once again I got it from a brown leather Bible called Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation, copyright 1988,89,90, 91, 93, 96 by Tyndale House Plublisher, Inc. Wheaton Il. 60189, Not plagiarizing. This is where I got it, accept it or not. I also looked up the word faith in the Catholic Encylopedia and it pretty much says the same thing. Now my question has not been answered.

Not originally. This dialog between us has gone on longer than it needed to.

Fair enough rev. I am not going to call you a liar šŸ˜‰

🤷 No problems accepting it rev.

Hi. I’m looking for some understanding on Romans 1:17 (St. Paul was referring to Habakkuk 2:4), particularly ā€œThe just shall live by faith.ā€ This might be called Luther’s proof text for his reformational doctrine of justification by faith alone. Thanks!
I re-read Rom 1:17 and I did not see the words ā€œfaith aloneā€ in it. You brought up Luther’s belief in the justifications by faith alone. JonNC made a good post on the Lutheran position with a link on the* ā€˜Joint Declaration’ *which is well worth reading. I am convinced that a lot of the problem is how different Christians (Protestant + Catholics) define faith. I don’t know of any Protestants who would say that saving faith would not be alive with works. Nor have I ever heard a Catholic say one does not need faith.

From the *Council of Trent Decree on Justification *Chapter VIII:
In what manner it is to be understood, that the impious is justified by faith, and gratuitously.
And whereas the Apostle saith, that man is justified by faith and freely, those words are to be understood in that sense which the perpetual consent of the Catholic Church hath held and expressed; to wit, that we are therefore said to be justified by faith, because faith is the beginning of human salvation, the foundation, and the root of all Justification; without which it is impossible to please God, and to come unto the fellowship of His sons: but we are therefore said to be justified freely, because that none of those things which precede justification-whether faith or works-merit the grace itself of justification. For, if it be a grace, it is not now by works, otherwise, as the same Apostle says, grace is no more grace.
God bless you

From the Haydocks Catholic Bible commentary (LINK)

Ver. 17. For the justice of God. He does not here mean that justice, by which God is just in himself, but that justice, or sanctification, which he communicates to men, and by which they are justified and sanctified. — From faith to faith. That is, by faith, and an increase in faith, inasmuch as, by increasing in faith, we advance in virtues; as it is written, (Habacuc ii. 4.) the just man liveth by faith; including the love of God, hope, and other virtues. (Witham)

Jon I think this is saying the same thing you are, just in a differing way. Your thoughts. Peace
Yes, Wm. I read a bit in the link for context, and I believe what the commnetary says seems to indicate what I was, maybe less artfully, trying to say.

Jon

As do we all, and he did so, and it was not an antiCatholic website. šŸ‘
I hate to disagree with you but actually he didn’t. If he would have I wouldn’t said anything about it. After he was called on it, he did. Where Rev said he got the info was not anti-Catholic, where I found it was. I will trust rev that he got the info where he said he did and not from where I found it.

God bless

Good. Now there is one less thing that divides us šŸ™‚

What does Paul mean when, in Romans, he speaks of ā€œsaving faith?ā€
We must be very careful to understand faith as Paul uses the word because he ties faith so closely to salvation. It is not something we must do in order to earn salvation
faith is a work

John 6:28-29
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Welcome Returning,
Romans 1: 17 " The upright man finds life through faith".
God offers us the gift of faith through Jesus. Faith makes Jesus death on the cross effective in man. Faith is necessary to ensure this.
By taking up our own cross daily and following the way of Jesus and by keeping true to all he has commanded of us.Peace, Carlan
I had a hard economic year last year…went outside to this garden…this Scripture quote came to mind…I am not looking at a Bible right nowā€¦ā€˜If you would have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could move a mountain’…

Life is hard. When I read Romans 1:17 what I am reading is to live in faith and that is hope realized…we must believe that the Lord truly loves each one of us…and when things become overbearing, we must ask the Lord to make our burden light, and to conquer the current darkness into light, using our faith in Him.

Faith is depending on God for your sustenance and not man. ā€˜Nothing is impossible with God’.

**ā€œFor in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, ā€˜The one who is righteous will live by faith.ā€™ā€
Romans 1 17

What shall I think?
Then I will say it !
:angel1:
ā€œThe one who is righteous will live by faith.ā€
I understand from Roman 1:17 is : ā€œThe one who is righteous will live by faith.ā€**

I am glad you asked him for his reference, and glad he provided it. I am also glad he did not get it from the anti-Catholic website.šŸ‘
