I appreciate you sharing your pain and allowing me to share my experience. Sometimes God gives us trials so we can learn from them in order to help the next person through a similar situation and bring them closer to Him.
Thank you! This has been really difficult for me, really difficult because I actually got along with this family and then all of a sudden things get serious between fiance and me and everything just fell apart…it’s ridiculous…SO I am confused and disturbed and unsure of a lot of things but I know that what I feel for him is real and I don’t want to lose him over her… you know?!

Thank you for your help and support, I appreciate it very much! God bless.

I got along really well with mine too until we announced our engagement - then she got hit with a double whamo. She was worried a) I would replace her in her son’s life and b) that we would take her granddaughter that she was raising which is a long story. A is an obvious - it happens and is part of life. B we left up to the granddaughter. It did not have to be hostile - she unfortunately made it that way.

I am serious it’s insane?! After he told her he loved me and wanted me in his life permanently she started literally pushing me away…then when she heard us talking about marriage and telling his dad, then things got bad, then even worst after he announced the engagement! And when he told them the wedding was either next year or the year after based on how we do with the house construction and stuff, she well ugh, yeah, never ending… 😦

I am just going to stay away and that’s it…If they show up to the wedding they do if they don’t they don’t and that’s it!

My in-laws were not at the wedding by mutual non-invitation. My MIL actually tried to hit me in the back of the head with a picture frame as i was leaving her house once. But anyway- They actually took it upon themselves to sit HIS daughter down and tell her WE were getting married before her own father had the chance to announce the engagement to her. But it’s over now and I hope for his daughter’s sake that peace can eventually be found b/c I know eventually my dss will come back to my dh as his daughter even if it is in her adult life - she is too much like him not to.

One MUST look at Scripture in the correct historical perspective.

“7 `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.”

Yes, in the time of Christ a man did leave his father and mother. However, they ususally would still live in the same home or in another tent/building in the family compound. A bride became the daughter of her mother in law, and was subserviant to her MIL until the day her MIL died.

Christ never told us to make a man choose between his mother and his wife. We are all called to live in love and compassion.

Mine actually pushed me once and raised her hand at me… I was ready to strike back… It was pretty intense…all for what? Because she told me she couldn’t stand the way I was raising my kids because a good mother spanked the kids and put the kids to sleep at 7:30 pm everyday…

I do hope your hubby’s daughter comes back to him…I think it would be best for everyone…

Thanks for sharing your story…God bless.

Sorry to say this but after that quote you quoted Jesus didn’t say “and wife will become inlaws subserviant until the mil passes away!” That was just a custom of the times… thanks for sharing…

And I agree we should try and live in harmony and compassion what happens when it’s only one side giving and the other rejecting???

I do read in historical context as well - but even in historical context it states very clearly that when forced to make a choice your first priority is to the vocation of marriage. Scripture also states very clearly that no one is to be suboordinate to someone who gives orders against those of Christ. That is where “let no one be called Father before Me” comes from. I do also draw your attention to Matthew 10:34-36 which is my favorite passage.

My contextual study of this with my priest is simple - sometimes in order to stand for our beliefs of what is right and wrong in God’s eyes we will be in “battle.” This can be as horrendous as being a martyr or as annoying as having to tell a friend you don’t approve of their language or lifestyle. We find our peace in the next life. When we make vows in a Sacrament and anyone tries to break that Sacrament they are going directly against what God’s will is for us. We must seperate our marriage from those harmful influences.
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s foes will be those of his own household.” (Matthew 10:34 – 36)

We become Protestants when we pull verses out of context (both societial and textual) and use them to justify our actions.

Your own priest has suggested you put this relationship on hold. Listen to him.

He didnt’ say it had to be on hold for a month or a year, we were supposed to talk to each other until we came to a solution then meet with him next week for individual and couple counseling…AND that’s what we did…We spoke about all the Priest asked us to do and talked…No yelling no anger we actually spoke without hurting each other, and without manipulation…I think this was the very first time we have actually spoken in a deep connection stronger than I thought possible… And like I said, the reason why his mother nothing else…

I am not justifying my actions… At all… I was saying that nothing states in the Bible regarding a daughter in law becoming a subserviant of her mil… that’s all I said…

Thanks for your advise, help and concern Ike…It’s greatly appreciated…

I’m not qualified to discuss the main part of this problem but there is a part of it that I think I can say something about.

(Well, something, else, too. With a problem like this, it might be good to see a priest or a marriage counselor, to see if everybody can bury the hatchet. There’s a lot of stress here already and it seems that the marriage has not happened yet.)

Both my mother and my sister have personality problems, and my aunt has a real specialty personality problem, too.

People with a sado-masochistic personality seem to have grievances which are hard to comprehend to anybody but themselves. Another problem is that they are totally immune to anybody’s suggestion. To convince them of ANYTHING is saying to them that they are wrong, which they will never admit. All of that is the masochistic (self-punishing) part of their personality, which means they want to relive over and over the thing that causes them pain. And, like receiving the packages, events of unusually low significance otherwise remind them of their pain – which they secretly enjoy.

Then, the sadistic part of their personality is that they have to punish everybody – because that gives them pleasure, too. I don’t know the lady, of course, but I would think that iluvmybabies is not likely the only person who has been targeted by this future MIL. They tend to have (according to the textbooks) have a demeaning attitude towards others, and will often say things like “that stupid mailman” “the stupid plumber” “that crazy guy.” Always putting people “down”, especially people in authority.

Does this fit or not? I don’t know. What I am saying though, is that there are a couple such women in my life, and one thing I know, they will never change. Sending emails will not change them, having lunch with them will not change things, etc. The resiliency of future MIL’s personality is reflected in the difficulty in trying to deal with these problems.

In my situation, one woman goes beserk because she just finished washing the dishes and 10 minutes later there’s a dirty glass in the sink, and then the afghan was crooked on the couch. See? People ARE persecuting her! “Launch the attack. Make everybody suffer.”

It’s the oldest story in the world. I’m a guy trying to figure out three women and use logic with them – well, forget it. None of them even wants to change, doesn’t see that they are doing anything wrong, have no reason to change, are sticking to their guns, and are certainly not going to take the slightest suggestion from me! Yup, sado-masochistic personality. YOU AINT GONNA CHANGE THEM

Well-lllllllllllll, OK then.

I would say while the life experience is great let’s not try to diagnose anybody over the internet.

However, we all did go to family counseling and it did help for a bit. Then they became unwilling to go anymore so we stopped. Just one of those things. They felt that they didn’t have issues and we had all of them. So it became useless to sit there and waste the copay.

I’m not diagnosing anybody. I’m sharing some similar experiences I’ve had with strongly-willed people in my family. Right, this is not the place to diagnose anybody, and it’s not the place for solving anybody’s personal problems. My advice was to seek the assistance of a priest or counselor.

Sooner rather than later, we all have to learn that there are some things we just can’t change. This overreacting future MIL is a problem that perhaps no one can change.

WOW! I uhm am kind of speechless on this because I never realized anything like this…Yeah his mother is like that…Always everyone is lesst then she is, like she told me in the email she’s better than me… And yeah that’s how she is…When I would help her around the house, like after we were invited for dinner or something, she would reclean what I did use the excuse that she saw a dust particle fall on it, or the wind brought in leaves or something…

Not only that but she mistreats her stepdaughter’s husband all the time…HE swore he was never going to come back…AND ever since his sister and I got into a fight last year for something stupid I did, no matter how much I have apologized for it, she has treated me coldly and dragging-you know smiling when you can tell she doesn’t mean it- kind of attititude to keep her relationship with her brother positive…BUT after reading her agreeing with her step mom and father about her reaction towards me email, I have realized that all along they have been playing me to make him want to leave me, or make me want to leave him…By over stressing me to not want to make things work because of them…AND I came really close to it after that day…FOR NOTHING…

And no I now see that it’s not going to change… instead it’s getting worst…

I don’t know how to make it up to my fiance, I know he’s hurt by me but he wants to make things work… I am just scared I might have put a scar on him that may never heal…And he will in turn end up treating me wrong because of my pain and frustration from this family… 😦

Yeah actually that’s the way they said it…they said i was an instigator and always tryign to start fights… I am sorry i I was trying to diagnose anything I didn’t mean to…I was trying to express my feelings at the moment…thanks!

I agree with you because of the things you described, how she mistreats others, blames everyone for her own mistakes all the time… She would tell me off for no reason and I would have to be the one on my knees apologizing to her because of nothing…But it kept the water’s level…NOW I was told I was a smart *** for apologizing??? OK whatever…I am just not bothering with it…Now I need to figure out how to make things better between my fiance and myself because I know I did hurt him over his mother…

If this man would defend his mother over you is this the man you want to be with for the rest of your life?

No he didn’t defend her…He told me that he wanted to see their reaction towards it…And I understand why he did it…After words he told them that it was fine if they wanted things that way they were going to have what they wanted, and told them he was marrying me no matter what they said…Then they hung up… Remember he bought me a house…And helped pay off my car debt…I don’t think his family was happy about that…at all…

Very good - he is a keeper then. 😉 👍 Now, since he is going to be the spiritual head of your household why would you question whether or not he is doing the right thing? it is HIS family not yours that is the problem.

Good day! Because I didn’t want them to have a bad relationship, that’s why…and now they do including his sister towards him and they were super close…
