As rumors swirl in Rome that the Vatican will soon issue a statement on the reported Marian apparitions at Medjugorje, a noted Italian journalist has warned that a negative judgment could …

I don’t believe it would split the church. That would imply that there are HUGE amounts of people who defend it. Of course there are those that do defend it but they are a minority as compared to other issues.

Fr. Alexandre Awi Melo, the author of the book, acted as the Pope’s secretary during his visit to Brazil in July 2013, nearly two years ago. The book is based on his conversations with Francis in the course of that visit. The remarks about Medjugorje – possibly no more than off-the-cuff remarks made in a moment of informal chitchat – occupy a page or so in a 264-page book (link below). Is it really worth anybody’s while to use these remarks to second-guess the outcome of a formal inquiry which is now in its concluding stages, nearly two years later?

At least in Latin America, there are huge amounts of people supporting it. I don`t mean this could split the Church at all, but it would have a big impact.

Even here in the Philippines actually a lot of Catholics support Medjugorje, and not just the laity…

Medjugorje was one of the biggest things I used to support when I first came back to the faith. Even if the judgement is negative, I don’t really have a deal with it.
