Neighborhood Kitten problem

My neighbors have a tiny little kitten that they let outside. She’s as sweet as can be and is going to get hit by a car. I’ve nearly hit her twice and I’m defiantly among the more careful drivers in the neighborhood. I’m really frustrated by the situation.

They’ve been warned by others to keep the kitten inside, yet they don’t comply. Someone needs to take action before fluffy becomes roadkill kitty.

We live an an area with loads of cats/kittens. I can’t afford the $70 surrender fee to one of the no kill shelters, nor can I afford to drive to a cheaper one. If I bring the cat to the city’s animal control it has 7 days before its euthnized. These people are trashy and I’m sure wouldn’t pay the rescue fee. I’d let them know, of course, but I wouldn’t aid them in paying. I’m sure they could come up with the money…as they smoke like chimnies and throw parties with booze like I’ve never seen. But knowing their other decisions, kitten is not high priority.

I can’t keep the kitten. I already have a dog. I can’t give it away, either, becuase my job is a common dump site and they’re constantly giving away kittens.

Either way I don’t see this kitten living for long…if it does it’ll be contributing to the feral population before its grown.
 
You sure you can’t keep it? I mean, I am sure the dog would get along with her. Do you have any friends or family members that would want it? If I lived near you, I’d take it in a flash. Glod bless your soul. Maybe God sent her to you because she needs you. Or put her in a room away from the dog temporarily until you find him a home. Is there a local Humane Society or ASPCA in your area that will take her in? I am sure if you call them, they will give you some advise.

I have a 2 room apt with no door between the bedroom and the kitchen/livingroom. My dog LOVES kittens, she’s very good with them, but she’s a handful as she’s a “damaged” shelter mutt. She’s come along way and I’d hate to see her regress. I’d love a kitten but not at the expense of months of training. I also hate litterboxes with a passion and I don’t have a truly seperate room to put it in since it wouldn’t fit in the bath.

And the local agencies are the ones that charge a fee…no matter if it was your cat or not (too many people dumping their kittens and cats, especially lately with the economy). The cheapest one is like $50!!!

If I had a better place…or if I wasn’t single…then it’d be more of a possibility.

Its not stealing to take a cat out of the public road…there are leash laws and the people have been warned…its not on anyone’s property or near their home. I’m pretty sure in this town you can even capture an animal and animal control will come and pick it up for you. But animal control is a 7-day death sentence.

I don’t know if there’s much you can do. I also have many stray and owned cats wandering around my neighborhood. (Outdoor cats are far more useful than indoor cats, in my opinion.) It’s just something we deal with.

There are other strays…but they’re smart enough to get out of the road…to hide when people come or to get out of the way of a car. This little kitten is just really dopey…:rolleyes:…has no fear of cars. (which also worries me she’ll climb into my warm engine come fall)

Awe, the poor thing. 😦 I will be praying to Saint Francis for this kitten…and that you will be given the wisdom to do whatever God may ask you to do!
 
Our local Human Society doesn’t charge if your drop off a kitten that isn’t yours. Can you call yours to see what their policy is? Even they sadly have euthanize the poor kitty it’s kinder than being crushed by a car.
 
Your city or county may have a law stating that animals must be prevented from wandering off the owner’s property. If so, you can call the code enforcement officer and your neighbor will receive a citation pretty quickly.
 
I would soo take her if I could and you were nearby! My mom and I used to rescue strays while she was alive. Now I live in apartment with a roommate and two cats already. I’ll have St. Francis and my mom pray for the kitten. Do you know anyone else who might possibly care for her at least short term? I know the local humane society here has a foster program.
I hate seeing/hearing about animals being neglected. At one time, my mom and I had six kittens and three adults. All of our cats were strays that we didn’t give away. I

I am an animal lover, yet I do accept that animals are to never, ever demand the same respect due to human beings. I wish that all wild animals did not have to stay outside during the winter, yet I should not be making that comment since that is what God chose to do :D.

I think that all pets are to be guaranteed food, water and some shelter. There are pet owners who provide these requirements for their outdoor dog or cat. Is the kitten being denied this? If not, there is no reason for there to be an animal citation based on these grounds. I know of a lot of outdoor cats who live decent lives. We use dogs to herd and hunt; why can we not use cats to keep the mice and rats away?😉

I hope I did not come off as indifferent, but animals still need to be treated below what a human deserves.

Warning to sensitive ears!!!

I remember hearing stories of farmers who would drown extra farm kittens in the lake because there were too many. I do not think that caused them to go to hell.

In most localities, leash laws only apply to dogs.
 
I like outdoor cats. Growing up in the country we had outdoor cats. They were good cats and I wouldn’t of wanted to keep them inside. But now I’m in a neighborhood. My yard is the biggest, and there are roads everywhere. This kitten is bound to get hit.

I think leash laws apply to cats beucase they also apply to “exotics” that are gaining popularity.

You didn’t say exactly where you are located, but in Maine, leash laws apply only to dogs (including wolf hybrids):

Title 7: AGRICULTURE AND ANIMALS

Chapter 719: UNCONTROLLED DOGS HEADING: PL 1987, C. 383, §3 (NEW)
§3911. Dogs at large

It is unlawful for any dog, licensed or unlicensed, to be at large, except when used for hunting. The owner or keeper of any dog found at large is subject to the penalties provided in this chapter. [1999, c. 254, §3 (AMD).]

Not in Maine. However, towns are typically responsible for enforcement and restrictions on leash/license laws not the entire state.
 
I am not a fan of leash laws for cats, nor am I a fan of outdoor cats. HOWEVER, if people in the neighborhood be careful, the cat can be trained to avoid cars. I think taking the cat, full well knowing it belongs to someone else, would amount to stealing. Is the cat being fed? If so, leave it alone.

Someone else mentioned drowining excess kittens…I know many people who did this who lived on farms.

I think it would be mean to intentionally take the kitten that you know to belong to someone else, simply because you don’t agree with how they take care of it.

I don’t agree with how others raise their children, but I don’t go running to CPS!

A more apt analogy would be: I don’t agree with how others raise their children, but I don’t kidnap them and then surrender them for adoption in the next town over.
