Just found this forum. Interesting dialogue between different points of views.

Interested in the historical issue that has been raised – what happened to European Paganism after the conversion of Constantine? Were there many Pagan martyrs?

I wouldn’t use the Catholic Encylopedia for information on Paganism, or Chick.com for information on Catholicism.

Perhaps it depends what sort of information you’re looking for. I’d agree that, if you want information about how a religion is understood by its adherents, the best source is something published by adherents. E.g. a Pagan source for information about Paganism.

But… I’d suggest it’s a little different if you’re looking for historical information about e.g. how adherents of one religion may have mistreated those of another.

If you want information about Christians martyred by Pagan rulers, the Catholic Encyclopedia might be a good source.

Conversely, if you really want information about Pagans martyred by Christian rulers, you’ll find it presented by authors who are willing to take a critical look at Christendom.

Even Wikipedia, freely open to all the editing you like, makes no mention of this. Neither does Britannica.

This is what’s called an “argument from silence”.

What these encyclopedias actually contain may all be very reliable; but does that mean you can draw conclusions from what they don’t contain?

Does it prove anything, one way or the other, if they “make no mention” of something?
