Bear with me for a second here… My nephew is a barrel of laughs and loved by all. He always has a funny story or a quick one liner that gets a room to giggling. Among his little bag of tricks is his ability to allow a living room full of family and regular guests to hear the unmistakable and often quite loud squeek of intestinal gas while he is in the kitchen… *which is acoustically inclined to amplify even the tiniest whisper due to the laminate flooring and sparse furnishings! *

The nervous chuckling of some, and outright inability for certain guests to contain themselves in laughter only provides fuel for his next performance which is usually a clean joke, or magic trick with coins for the kids.

Are his “intestinal antics” or our encouraging this by laughing at (or with) him sinful in any way?

:o

“Thou shall not pass gas in public”

Yes, it is sinful.😃

Just joking. While it is definately bad manners and his parents should be correcting him, it is not sinful.

After re-reading, is he already an adult? Anyway, if he his, it is definately bad manners, but still not sinful.

Note: This thread probably shouldn’t be in the Traditional Catholicism forum.

I wouldn’t think of it as sinful, but somewhat immature and tasteless, and not respectful. He hasn’t realised that if people laugh it’s more likely to cover their uneasiness and distaste without being impolite. If it’s accepted to any degree it’s only because he’s popular and otherwise liked. I know that there are some people, mostly males, who think it’s hilarious between themselves, but if they knew what others really felt about it they might desist if they weren’t actually out to shock or to stir for their own amusement.

In that it isn’t treating others with respect it could border on sinful but as those who act like this generally don’t realise it is distasteful to others, just believe it’s funny, then it isn’t sinful as such. Obviously your nephew intends no harm, particularly as he does keep his stories and jokes ‘clean’.

The question is whether or not he’ll do or say almost anything to get a laugh out of people. I’ve known comedian-types who are like that, and yes, I’d say that such a disposition is susceptible to selfishness and cruelty. Anytime we put anything ahead of God, we sin.

Maybe he needs a spanking for being so rude. It’s time for his dad to take him to the wood shed. 😃
