hello everyone! I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but I don’t know much about catholicism (and I don’t know many catholics) so I thought I should ask it here (I have decided to convert). I was wondering if it’s immoral or wrong to have a subscription to video streaming sites like netflix or hbo max? Because there’s lots of wholesome content on platforms like that, but there’s also some really bad stuff that promotes evil. obviously I won’t be watching any of the bad stuff, but is it a sin to give those companies money if I know it might go to them making an immoral show or something like that? I heard someone once say that it was “mediate/proximate material cooperation in evil” and that it would be a sin. thanks!

By this logic, it’s wrong to have Internet connectivity because the internet contains a lot of porn.

but I’m directly paying for streaming sites, giving money directly to companies that might use it to make evil shows. me using the internet doesn’t give any money to porn companies

No, but you’re giving it an internet service provider that profits off of mass consumption of porn.

My point is the link in both cases is remote enough that you don’t need to worry, in my opinion.

oh okay! I was under the impression that you needed a “proportionate reason” to materially cooperate in evil (and that wanting to watch some tv isn’t a good enough reason).

I was wondering if I could get some others’ opinions on this? 🙂

I gave up Netflix when they supported Planned Parenthood in the past. So, I cut that subscription. Why? Because I do not support those grave sins. Sure it was not easy at first, but we got through it.

I have also given up on other things that support ideologies that are not good at all. If it is clicks they want, I stop going to their sites. I do not click the link, they get no money from me. No, I do not succeed all the time.

If possible like in the case of Netflix, I did write them an email as well. Doubt they cared, at least I told them why.

There are a few TV Channels that we are starting to block on TV for the same reasons. And those are channels we used to watch.

No, it is not easy. But take it one step at the time. What is Heaven worth?

I think it’s great that you’re boycotting Netflix, but do you think it’s a moral necessity? like do you think it’s immoral to have a subscription?

Not only Netflix. Cartoon Network for my kids, and Freeform for the family. We gave up those as well.

I do not know how to put this on words.

I do not want to support things that are opposed to our God.

I see it the way you seem to see it. Netflix and the Internet are not equal things at all. Here is another one. I purchased a year of Amazon Prime. Then found out all they do. I do not like it. Once the year is up, I will likely drop prime as well. That will not be easy, but only because it is a commodity.

could I please get someone else to reply??? I’m kind of freaking out… I tend to worry a lot about things and now I’m worried that I’m displeasing God

I hate to say it, but this sounds like borderline scrupulosity, and it is not an uncommon “occupational hazard” among serious, faithful orthodox Catholics.

We live in a world where good and evil are intertwined in such a way that remote, material cooperation in sinful enterprises cannot be avoided without going deeply “off the grid”, homesteading, growing one’s own food, raising animals for meat and dairy products, and having no wealth aside from land, gold, and silver. Such remote and material cooperation is allowed, and the Church can only offer us general guidelines — she can’t micro-manage every possible situation.

I really have to recommend that you find yourself a priest, faithful to the magisterium in all things, and work with him to determine where to “draw the line”. I would also take comfort in the fact that faithful Catholics routinely subscribe to services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and cable or satellite TV, and the Church has not condemned them as living in sin, on account of it.

There is also the case of choosing to boycott a business, not necessarily because it would be sinful to patronize them, but just on principle. I do not patronize CarQuest or Moe’s Southwest Grill because of their support of JDRF. Moe’s food is excellent (if you like that sort of thing, and I do) but I don’t wish to patronize a business that I do not really “need”. People will legitimately differ as to what they choose to do, and not to do.

ohh! I’m not a Catholic yet so I don’t have a priest but I want to become catholic.

When you’re asking the priest about Netflix you can ask him about Catholicism as well. Seems that’s the more important thing you need to find out about.

Based on your previous posts, and considering you aren’t Catholic yet, I would strongly advise you “don’t sweat the small stuff” at this point in your spiritual journey.

*Pray and read a little of the catechism everyday.

*Focus on loving God and your neighbor.

*Sign up for RCIA.

thank you very much, I have a type-a personality so I worry a lot about. little details.
