Thought this might be an interesting food for thought topic that I came across quite by surprise this week.

Full disclosure I’m in that oft criticized Millennial generation, albeit at the oldest edges of it as are many of my acquaintances give or take a half dozen years or more on either side. And most are quite liberal in their views. However I came across a trend among several I wasn’t aware of until just this week. In light of the recent moves by several states to effectively ban abortion (since virtually all pregnancies, particularly unwanted ones, are not discovered until after 6 weeks), and States like Ohio going even further and trying to ban most birth control like IUDs and the Pill… that several acquaintances are electing to be sterilized lest they be forced to carry a baby against their will. No less than 5 in just the last 24 hours have made it known they have tubal ligations or vasectomies that have been recently performed or scheduled. The number who’ve been driven to this quite frankly shocked me.

Made me wonder what the response to that would be here that laws (which will almost certainly be struck down anyway) are driving people into surgeries to protect themselves from what they are expressing as our drive to dystopia.

Ever bought meds at full price? And what business is it of the government as it pertains to private health coverage?

Also not the main thrust of the topic so let’s take it offline.

Opponents say it would also ban effective methods of birth control.
Isn’t that why the liberals have Planned Parenthood? For free birth control and “reproductive health care”? Afterall, according to them, abortion isn’t Planned Parenthood’s main business.

These people are making a very dramatic decision of body mutilating to make themselves “permanently” sterilized. (I have it in quotations because plenty of people still conceive after such surgeries). Although, the most dramatic decision is to take the life of your very own child, so, on the scale of sin, abortion is a far more serious sin against humanity and God than sterilization. Though both are evil.

Neither is right. Neither (pro-sterilization or pro-abortion) have the right attitude towards human life. Both are living out the false ideal that children are a curse, not a blessing, from God.

Hopefully, your acquaintances will heal from their misconceptions and will, later in life, decide to reverse their surgeries or adopt.

p.s., let them continue thinking that they can’t cross State Lines to pursue an Abortion

If doctors are willing to sterillize young people who have had no children yet, then I think their licenses to practice should probably be withdrawn. That is incredibly rash and stupid and any doctor willing to condescend to oblige such stupidity should be treated as a disgrace to that honorable profession.

So should anyone willing to murder babies.

On what grounds? No one is required to have children. Why does the calculus of that change for you if they’ve not had children?

Sterilization is a grave sin too, and would be considered a mortal sin for Catholics. However, I have to imagine that a person receiving sterilization (like other forms of artificial birth control) may be less culptible for this sin if they didn’t know it was a mortal sin. I think God might be able to forgive this sin easier than the sin of abortion.

To me, it’s all about picking the lesser of two evils. While both are grave sins, sterilization is clearly the lesser of two evils when compared to abortion.

So if outlawing abortion lead to more sterilizations, I think that would be an improved situation.

I hope I’m making sense?

God Bless

Irony being they’re almost all in California where abortion will likely remain legal indefinitely.

Is seems weird to be mentioning these types of things to a friend.

Oh, I don’t know, on the grounds that maybe they are obviously young, thinking irrationally, have no children yet and will most certainly want the procedure reversed, at great cost and possible risk to themselves, without a guarantee of success?

I strongly disagree with this. Why should your beliefs trump that of those adults who wish to be sterilized? An adult can run for office, go to war, get married. Why should they not be afforded the ability to choose a life without children. If you want to say that they might change their minds, that’s true. And sometime people change their minds about wanting children after having children. We don’t prevent adults from having kids just because they haven’t considered all options.

They can still choose to not have kids without mutilating themselves for no medical reason.

Still, I’m not saying sterilization surgery should be illegal, even if it’s immoral. At least it’s somewhat private and doesn’t impact an innocent life.

I know you’re not saying to make it illegal, but @SeraficLeo is. I have no problem with people shoulting from the mountaintops voicing their opinion against sterilization.

You can be an adult but not mature. A doctor should at least be professional and take their profession seriously, which in part is to do no harm. A young woman wanting to be sterillized ‘just in case’ she happens to be raped and conceive is clearly thinking irrationally. Notice that it’s not because she doesn’t want to have children at all, full stop (but even then who’s to say she might not change her mind?) but out of fear of a fairly rare occurrence. Now if she’s willing to be sterillized, it’s hard to imagine why she would be against taking contraceptives to avoid the risk of pregnancy (neither of which are always 100% guarantees, as an earlier poster pointed out), which would remove the fear but at least leave her the possibility of having children, should she so choose. Sterillization is supposed to make that virtually impossible.
