New Age- what is it?

I think of “New Age” as basically just another word for “miscellaneous.” It’s not one movement, but a whole bunch of different and completely unrelated movements, that people in marketing like to lump into one giant category. And yes, this even includes some Christian denominations.

Generally, people don’t refer to themselves as “New Age.” It’s usually somebody else putting them in that category. One guy is talking about having visions of angels. Another guy is talking about being abducted by aliens. Another guy is promoting a new kind of health food. Another one is selling paintings of fairies. Another guy is pitching some pseudo-science about curing depression with magnets. Another one is talking about living in Atlantis in a past life. Yes another is showing off his blurry photographs of Bigfoot. They all look at each other and say the same thing. “All these people are crazy, except for me!”

Of course, these so-called New Agers do work well with each other, because it’s good for business. They all profit from the same customer base – people without a lot of critical judgement, but lots of cash.

It’s become an accepted fact in many parts of society.

For instance the basis of “organic” food is all New Age. It’s about nourishing some life force that you can’t measure but that is missing in man made things (as if anything is ever really man made). Plus a big dose of hippy antiestablishment is mixed in.

Alternative medicines are full of New Age. Holistic medicine is pretty much pure New Age, but it’s far from the only one.

Some even tries to parade as Christianity. For instance “The Secret” where you can manipulate the forces in the universe through your thoughts is New Age. Can’t believe how many tried to claim it is Christian.

UFOs. Stay away from those who say they have a message from “Our Space Brothers.” I have some booklets about this.

Atlantis. Stay away from those who claim to be in contact with “Ancient Masters” from Atlantis or anywhere else. Or those who claim to have discovered the lost technology of Atlantis.

I spoke with a lady selling crystals and she could not give me a coherent reason about why I might need one or what it could do for me. It is claimed that crystals can do work that attracts a mate, heals an illness or affects your mind in some positive way.

Always be wary of Psychic Fairs and tapes and books that claim the Wisdom of the Aztecs or the value of Astrology or tapping into your “hidden potential.”

The devil repackages everything so that every generation thinks it has discovered something “new.” He also relabels things. In the past, one could find Occult books, today, they are listed under New Age.

God bless,
Ed

I am on a mailing list of overstock books for sale and came across How to Defend Yourself Against Alien Abduction and bought it just for S&Gs.

It’s far broader in our society then even what that link showed. It’s not any one religion, it’s in a nutshell, any religious belief system, not of traditional origin, that is always deeply flawed and leads you away from Christianity. It can be very subtle, like dabbling in astrology and the modern myriad of astrology like systems, to out right, follow these guidelines to get these results.

We live in dangerous times for the poorly catalyzed Catholic, anything that’s offering fame, fortune, peace, etc. that is not of strictly the Christian faith, take extra time to discern what’s being taught, and never follow blindly into any of it, for often, what seems innocent at first, leads you down a very dark path.
Catholics are catalyzed? How and why?

Organic foods are being sold because of the huge number of insecticides and other chemicals used on crops and animals, and because most products offered for sale as food contain artificial flavors, colors, and other additives, in order to reduce costs and increase profits. Artificial colors and flavors are even added to dog food.

I am diabetic and I have been told many times by both my physician and my dietician that organic foods are much better for us.

Do you have children? Have you checked the ingredients on boxes of pre-sweetened cereal that are produced specifically for children or the preservatives present in most breads? Do you think it’s a good idea to have artificial ingredients in your child’s diet? Let’s check a few of these additives:

Nutrasweet (Aspartame):

Research indicates that aspartame is associated with the following:

(1) formaldehyde accumulation in the body
(2) painful fibromyalgia symptoms
(3) brain tumors (Swedish Study)
(4) memory loss
(5) lymphomas / leukemias / kidney & peripheral nerve cancer
(6) weight gain
(7) combined toxicity from formaldehyde & excitotoxins

One analysis shows nearly 100% of independent research finds problems with aspartame.

Let’s look at artificial colors and preservatives:

(1) benzoates can trigger allergies such as skin rashes and asthma as well as believed to be causing brain damage.
(2) bromates destroy the nutrients in the foods. It can give rise to nausea and diarrhea.
(3) butylates are responsible for high blood cholesterol levels as well as impaired liver and kidney function.
(4) red dye 40 is suspected to cause certain birth defects and possibly cancer.
(5) mono and di-glycerides can cause birth defects, genetic changes and cancer.

There are more examples. Many, many more.

A healthy diet is one that is completely organic. It may very well be that New Agers promote organic foods but in this instance they are completely correct.

BTW, I am not anti-establishment and I worked as a sworn law officer for a county in California until I was injured and became disabled.

I hear you. I reject the supernatural and I still love my fresh garden veggies that I grow. Fresh produce is so much tastier IMHO. And, I love being able to give some of it away.
I’m not a new ager, not a hippie and not anti-establishment. Just not a theist.

Just a curious FYI - when I was researching demonology and UFO’s I thought it was curious that those who had suffered demon possession described nearly identical symptoms to those who had been ‘abducted by aliens’. Also curious? These ‘aliens’ have, at times, claimed to be ‘god’ and/or encouraged people to realize that they ARE god.

Sounds like our modern age has found a more acceptable way to deal with demons. Despite all of this new age enlightenment people usually balk at the idea of demons being real (which amuses me because the same people who profess to speak to angels refuse to accept a demon could be real)… so, the great deceiver found a new way to interact with ‘modern man’.

It is also important to mention that involvement with going to psychics, reading tarot cards, visiting “channelers”, meditation which focuses on “nothing”, and a myriad of other like things can open the door to serious problems with evil spirits.

A very good book called “Ransomed from Darkness” by Moira Noonan tells of a Catholic woman who got into these practices for many years, and how she got delivered and brought back to the Church through the intercession of our Blessed Mother.

I believe you can do a search on her name and come up with more information about “new age”.
I have been shocked lately how many Catholics I have run into that think nothing of going to a psychic or having their cards read. Just unbelievable numbers, and these are older, cradle Catholics too, not people searching for a different religion.

I always laugh when people don’t believe in angels, demons, fairies, leprechauns, genies, vampires, ghosts, gods or the boogeyman, but believe in space aliens. I guess they figure that because they’re more grounded in the real world (biological life, actual physical planets), the stories are easier to swallow. But the fact is that biological life has to operate on certain principles, most of which can be used to refute any of these alien stories – the most obvious being to ask why the aliens always look more or less like humans. (If there really was an alien, it wouldn’t look like anything we would recognize. And if there really is a super-advanced civilization, it wouldn’t take an interest in us.)

In a strange sort of way, ghosts are hobgoblins are easier to believe in, because there’s no science behind it to be flawed. 😛

I’ve actually met quite a few people who have had visions of angels and who talk to the spirit world (and very accurately, from my personal observation), and many of them identify as Catholics. These people are basically lumped into the “New Age” category. But is it really contradictory? They don’t seem to think so. In fact, I’m told that Catholicism includes the “charisms,” which includes being able to see and communicate with spirits, and that it’s considered by the Church to be a gift from God. Am I misinformed?

I have been hearing about this “New Age” stuff for a while now. Can anyone please help me? What exactly is this? Is it a new religion?
The New Age is the sin of Adam and Eve. Wanting to be God and deciding what is good and what is evil.
The New Age is the gospel according to Oprah

Christians are to only communicate with one Spirit and that is the Spirit of God.The charisms are all from this one Spirit.
Christians can and do see angels and demons.

Chuck Missler, a bible scholar, would say they are one and the same.
