A new app has been developed for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year to assist with daily reflection and prayer practice aimed at supporting attentiveness to the movement of Mercy and the many ways that we receive and respond to this movement in the everyday circumstances of our lives.

The ‘Mercy-ing’ app provides users a morning inspiration and an evening reflection, to frame their day, attentive to the events, interactions, relationships and circumstances of each day within the context of ‘being Mercy’.

Content for the app has been drawn from a wide selection of sources including scripture,
contemporary theologians, activists and thinkers. The app also includes the daily repetition of a consistent mercy “mantra”, as well as an inbuilt timer to assist with the reflective process.

The title of the app has a direct connection with Pope Francis, who when seeking to translate his motto from Latin to Spanish, coined the word misericordiando which in English translates to the word “Mercy-ing”. By expressing Mercy as a verb, it captures the sense of movement inherent in the heart of Mercy, which includes hearing the cry of all creation for mercy and responding.

The app has been funded by the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea and developed with the support of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, and Nga Whaea Atawhai o Aotearoa, Sisters of Mercy New Zealand.

To download the free app, visit the link below, reflections and content for the app will commence from December 1, and will conclude at the end of November 2016 in alignment with Jubilee Year.

Praise the lord. I downloaded the app at 1 minute after midnight, the very first minute of November 30th.

I day before it begins. I see this as a gift from God.

Jubilee Churches

Each of the four Papal Basilicas in Rome (Saint Peter’s in the Vatican, Saint John Lateran, Saint Mary Major, and Saint Paul Outside the Walls) has a Holy Door. These are Jubilee Churches; one can obtain the Jubilee indulgence by making a pilgrimage to one of them and fulfilling the other necessary conditions. The Basilicas of the Holy Land are also traditionally Jubilee Churches. In the rest of the world, the Jubilee Churches will be the diocesan church and any shrines in which the local Ordinary decides to open a Door of Mercy.
In Rome, in addition to the four Papal Basilicas, there will be three other Jubilee Churches. They are Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls (San Lorenzo fuori le Mura), The Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (Santa Croce in Gerusalemme), and Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls (San Sebastiano fuori le Mura). These churches, with the Papal Basilicas, make up the traditional “Seven Church Walk”. The importance of pilgrimages for the Jubilee suggests that the faithful rediscover and undertake this penitential itinerary left to the Romans by Saint Philip Neri in the 1500’s. Therefore, pilgrimages to any one of these three additional churches will also be an occasion to gain the Jubilee Indulgence.

Your display of enthusiasm for this coming Jubilee year is really infectious and heartwarming, Landon Caeli. 🙂 Maybe starting the group topic is your challenge?!!

The graphics & design of the app look pretty chick-oriented 😛

Oh well. I work in an elementary school. I’m used to it.
