The Papal nuncio to the United Kingdom has said that he hopes a new Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh will be appointed next month.

Archbishop Antonio Mennini was in Scotland today for the announcement that the Vatican had accepted Bishop Joseph Devine of Motherwell’s resignation of ten months ago, on his 75th birthday, in line with Canon Law.

The resignation of Cardinal O’Brien’s, former Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, submitted in 2012, was accepted this February, a few weeks ahead of his 75th birthday. The cardinal left the country earlier this month for a period of renewal and penance following his admission of behaviour that fell short of his role.

Four of Scotland’s eights diocese are currently without permanent bishops.
