New Archbishop in the St. Paul/Minneapolis Archdiocese

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed a new coadjutor archbishop to our Archdiocese. The following is a letter to the editor from one of our left wing, progressive, cafeteria Catholic, dissenting priests in our Archdiocese:

***Off to a sour start

At his opening news conference, the new coadjutor archbishop, John Nienstedt, needlessly sent a few shots over the bow (“Interests may signal goals of next archbishop,” April 25).

It would have been more gracious for this newcomer to greet his new subjects and ask for prayers. Rather, he chews out Catholics for making responsible family planning choices.

Incredibly, "Nienstedt lamented ‘the contraceptive mentality in this country’ that has made Catholic families smaller, saying it has … imperiled some Catholic schools. ‘If we want to keep the schools alive, we have to tell Catholics to have more babies.’ "

It takes a special type of mind to promote more babies to keep Catholic schools open. He should be chewing out Catholics for not making enough money to send their children to the schools.

How is that for support. I hope the new Archbishop fires him. We need a good housecleaning in this Archdiocese.
 
On the other hand, did the incoming bishop really say that? If you’re going to criticize contraception, don’t say that it’s because more kids keep the schools open! Sheesh.

But I did search for news on the forum of this appointment because I am hopeful for Minneapolis after this appointment. Lord knows that many have long suffered under the current regime.

:eek: Honestly, I can’t believe a priest wrote that! :eek:

To think I thought my own archdiocese was in trouble…this is truly disheartening!
 
Saying we need less contraception so our Catholic schools have more enrollment (read, tuition) is deplorable.

Still, he’s right artificial contraception needs to go…if quoted accurately, he just chose a ludicrous way to defend the truth.
 
I was unaware that there is a new archbishop for st. paul ,Minn. What happened to the former archbishop harry flynn. I happen to now him personally as he was my first spiritual director but have lost contact since I’ve moved around and so has he.

Harry Flynn is still in charge. The new guy will replace him after he retires. Observing from across the River, I would say that Bishop Flynn was fair and even handed and the new guy doesn’t sound all that bad. I think his remarks might have been triggered by the fact that one of the few Catholic High Schools, St. Agnes, was in danger of closing down for lack of funds and dropping enrollment. Once the news was out both problems were solved and everybody is happy once again. We have people in this neck of the woods who can look at the same guy and yap because he is too liberal while others yap because he is too conservative. Some of us have the wisdom to disregard both camps.🙂
