Dom Antonio Fernando Saburido took part in official cerimony last Sunday (16). He replaces dom José Cardoso Sobrinho, who excommunicated doctors who performed abortion.
The new archbishop of Olinda and Recife, in Brazil, 62-year-old Antonio Fernando Saburino, said, last Sunday, during his first interview after taking on his new post, that the Church must have “zero tolerance” towards pedophilia, which leaves “very profound wounds” on children and can not be accepted. Dom Fernando also condemned what he called “teology of retribution”, adopted by churches that start from the premise that if “you give, God gives in return”. And stressed that religion should preach spiritual prosperity, not the economic one. “God is detached, He’s love, He does things for free”, the archbishop stressed, when he spoke at the Abbey of Saint Benedict, in Olinda, in the Northeast of Brazil.
Following the interview, dom Antonio took part of the official ceremony in which he took on the Archdiocese, replacing conservative dom José Cardoso Sobrinho, at the Church of the Mother of God, in Recife. During the procession between the church and the Ground Zero Square, banners held by faithfull thanked the arrival of the new archbishop and celebrated dom José Cardoso Sobrinho’s departure, who announced the excommunication of doctors who performed the abortion of a nine-year-old girl, pregnant of twins after she was abused by her stepfather. There was also a doll of dom Hélder Câmra, former archbishop of Recife and Olinda. The Ground Zero Square was full of people to receive the first Mass celebrated by dom Antonio Fernando.
In a clear reconcilement speech, in which he intends to unite the archdiocese of Olinda and Recife – which covers nine dioceses, with 101 parishes distributed in 19 municipalities–, the archbishop made clear that no segment of the Catholic Church or of society will be excluded from work to be performed and that he will especially aim the poorest.

The people didn’t have access to the ceremony inside the church, which was reserved for around 300 priests and 50 bishops, besides the press and civil authorities. The narration of the video is in Portuguese.
