This morning Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop George Vance Murry, S.J. as Bishop of Youngstown, Ohio, USA. The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Thomas Joseph Tobin was named Bishop of Providence, Rhode Island in March 2005. Bishop Murry had been serving as Bishop of Saint Thomas, American Virgin Islands.

March 2005? You guys have been waiting for awhile!

Here’s a bit more on Bishop Murry:
The 58-year-old Murry, a Jesuit, was serving as an auxiliary bishop in Chicago when he was transferred to St. Thomas as coadjutor bishop in 1998 and took over as head of the diocese the following year. He was born in Camden, N.J.

Wow, that’s a change of scenery! St. Thomas, USVI to Youngstown, OH.

Peace

sunbelt to rustbelt, poor guy, I don’t know anything about him but I am glad my old diocese is now being taken care of. We lost a good bishop in Thomas Tobin, his regular columns of instruction on many topics in the diocesan newspaper are now collected in book form, I think by Our Sunday Visitor, and are very good teachings, notably for parents and catechists.

you guys, do click on the link, although it has very little info, but check out the google ads at the bottom, particularly “the pope’s cologne”

Extra bonus, not only is Bishop Murry a Jesuit, he has a PhD. He also used to be an auxiliary in Chicago.

What a good deal, Youngstown!

Quit being sarcastic, John! 😛

Seriously, someone ought to make a complete list of former Chicago priests and auxiliary bishops heading dioceses. There are quite a few.

If anyone has any good info on this Bishop, I’m dying to know where he stands on a variety of issues. We have a wonderful Tridentine parish in this Diocese. I wonder how he feels about that. I’m also very pro-life and would like to know how supportive he is of that, homeschooling, how tough he is on Liturgical abuses and making sure parish priests aren’t going off the heretical deep end. All of concern in this area. If no one knows anything specific, I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!
But we sure are glad we finally have a new shepherd!! I can’t wait to meet him!!
