New cardinals likely to sway next conclave

Pope Benedict XVI today named 24 new cardinals, 20 of whom are likely to be eligible to vote in the next Vatican conclave to elect a new Pope. While Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster was not named, the US Cardinal-designates are Archbishops Donald Wuerl (pictured above right) and Raymond Burke. The majority of the cardinals to be appointed on November 20 are Italian, increasing Italy’s chances of the next Pope being an Italian.

I suppose this result is inevitable, since the Vatican is surrounded by Italy. However, perhaps it would be better for the Church if cardinals were more more evenly distributed from around the world.

Amen, I agree 100%. I miss his podcast. I’m happy Burke is in but I’m not sure about Wuerl. He is a strong pro-life supporter but if I remember correctly he let Nancy Pelosi off the hook with a public statement regarding communion. I forget the details…sorry.

Pope Benedict named cardinals from all around the world. The college is getting more diverse, but diversity is not the premier goal for the collge of cardinals. As another poster said, the Holy Spirit will install the pope that we need and will protect the church no matter what man tries to do. God wins in the end!
