I am confused:

Is it Cardinal or

Cardinal ??

When I was young, it was always the former. Now it seems the latter is the one most seen in the media.

What is surprising is the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, traditionally a red-hat diocese, was not on the list.
Except for special positions, I believe it is normal for there to be a period of time between becoming an Archbishop and a Cardinal. Archbishop Wuerl has only been in that position since June.

If so, it must not be a long time since Abp. DiNardo has been the Archbishop for just over a year.

Peace

Tim

In cases where the previous holder of the see (i.e., the previous Archbishop) has retired and is a Cardinal, it is common for the new ordinary (i…e, Archbishop) to not become a Cardinal until after the previous holder has turned 80 (and thus may not vote in a conclave).

In the case of both Wuerl (Washington) and O’Brien (Baltimore), the previous holder is a Cardinal under 80 (McCarrick and Keeler, respectively).

Both Wuerl and O’Brien are likely to be included in the next consistory (probably in 2010).

We are delighted in Ireland that the Holy Father has appointed the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr. Sean Brady, a cardinal. There was speculation for some time in Ireland that a cardinal would be appointed, and it was thought there were two archbishops in the running for promotion - Dr. Diarmuid Martin of the Archdiocese of Dublin and Dr. Brady. The Archbishop of Armagh is Primate of All-Ireland (i.e. the Republic and Northern Ireland), and the last cardinal appointed Dr. Desmond Connell was from Dublin Archdiocese, so Catholics in Armagh and Northern Ireland are especially pleased!

I believe this will be the first time in history that Ireland has had three cardinals - Cardinal Cathal Daly, Cardinal Connell and the new Cardinal Elect. Neither of the two current cardinals are eligible to vote in conclave - I think Cardinal Connell turned 80 shortly after the election of Pope Benedict…

In case anyone is interested, here is a link to a news story reporting the Vatican’s announcement about Dr. Brady. I wish all the new cardinals well…

A surprising choice, perhaps - nice for the Irish, though.

Another Scottish Cardinal would not go amiss…

But don’t forget, the archdiocese is called “Galveston-Houston” 🙂

“Houston we have a problem”.
First word spoken from the surface of the Moom was “Houston”

We have always been blessed with good Bishops in Houston. Note the abuse scandal hardly touched us. In the late 70s there was a Priest in my new Parish that the Bishop received some credible accusations on. The Bishop called the police-they hauled the Priest away in handcuffs and he was soon defrocked. Thats the way it should have been handled in all dioceses

I feel truly blessed that Arch Bishop Dinardo being selected and elevated to Cardinal. I was confirmed into the Catholic Church by him in 2005! America is blessed to have the honor of him as Cardinal because he is without a doubt the most spiritually gifted man in the USA along with Father Corapi. Thanks be to God!
