New Carmel Foundation (no age/health restrictions)

Dear Friends,

If you are interested in a traditional Carmel, full habit, and Teresian
spirituality without age or health restrictions, please join us in the St.
EdithSteinCarmel Yahoo Group. We are being advised by Mother Mary Elizabeth from
the Clinton Township Carmel on key points around the new foundation. We have a
potential Carmel monastery located in Austin, Texas that can accommodate 4 - 8
Sisters at this point. (As Mother pointed out Carmels are often located in urban
areas and we can start small. The Detroit Carmel started out in a small suburban
home with only 4 Sisters!)

An online “Formation Group” is being formed now that will have in-depth study
and readings, discussions, teleconferences and a basic horarium culminating in a
Discernment Live-In in the Fall of 2009. No decision has been made yet on the
Rule and Constitutions that we will be following - that will be part of our
online Formation Group’s challenges to discern!

Can I ask two questions?
  1. Is this to be affiliated with either of the Carmelite orders?
  2. Does this have the approval of the bishop diocese of Austin?
I will include your intentions in my daily prayer I just ask that you pray for my ongoing formation.
 
Dear Brother,

Yes, it will definitely be affiliated with one of the two Carmelite orders - but, we are in the process of discerning which at this point.

At this point we are not required to have the Bishop’s approval. We are simply telling people of the emerging charism and gauging interest in it. As we move forward and have the appropriate documents and formation program in place, we will be approaching the Bishop for his approval. We are essentially going to be a new foundation following the traditional rules, simply without the restrictive age and health restrictions that so many Carmels are, out of necessity, forced to follow.

I will certainly pray for you - one of our goals is to contact Carmelite friars in the Diocese, as well as the San Antonio Carmel for guidance and direction.

The original intention was to found a Teresian (OCD) Carmel for older vocations. They are still discerning which set of constitutions to use–either the 1990s or 1991s.

Yes, this is incredible progress, and going a lot faster than anyone ever dreamed. We are praying the Flos Carmeli daily at noon for the intention, so perhaps we really shouldn’t be that surprised at what has come to pass.

Flos Carmeli is a hymn in homage to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, traditionally attributed to St Simon Stock, who is said to have received the Scapular vision.

The first two verses in the original Latin are as follows:

*Flos Carmeli,
Vitis florigera,
Splendor coeli,
Virgo puerpera.
Singularis.

Mater mitis,
Sed virinescia,
Carmelitis
Esto propitia
Stella Maris.*

In modern English this is rendered:

*Flower of Carmel,
Tall vine blossom laden;
Splendor of heaven,
Childbearing yet maiden.
None equals thee.

Mother so tender,
Who no man didst know,
On Carmel’s children
Thy favors bestow,
Star of the Sea.*

It’s very popular in Carmelite communities - in my own we recite it at least once every day.
 
Thank you for that very informative answer! Being Franciscan I’m not all that familiar with Carmelite ways and traditions. We sing a hymn to Mary at the end of Night Prayer each night. It is wonderful grace to be in relationship with Mary.
