What is meant by co-cathederal?
Really strange…they use the term as if it is really common. 🤷

I’m guessing the answer lies in the last paragraph:
Plans for the new Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart were launched at the end of the 1990s by Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza, who was the head of the archdiocese until he retired in 2006. The new co-cathedral shares duties with St. Mary Cathedral Basilica in Galveston, where the archdiocese was founded, as DiNardo’s home pulpit.
So, rather than just the Basilica, they have two Cathedrals…thus “Co-Cathedral.”

Thankyou Robert & I am Happy for you.
Not me…I was just chiming in. 🙂 I’m in Camas, WA and our Cathedral is in Seattle…about 3 hours North.

I was also confused by the term co-cathedral, so I am making my best guess based on the article.

Co-cathedrals are used when an arch-diocese incorporates more than one city with a cathedral - thus, there is one in Galveston and one in Houston, as a previous poster pointed out.

The opening truly is a wonderful moment of change in Church history, as the gravitational pull of American Catholicism is continuing to be relocated into the South. Now all we need is a mass conversion by mainline Southern Protestants. 👍

The parish I go to is a co-cathedral. It’s technically of a “lesser” status than the diocesan cathedral.

I originally had the title of the thread as just ‘cathedral’. But as stated above it really is a ‘co’ cathedral. So yes, we have two cathedrals in the Galveston-Houston Diocese.

An interesting side note is that “the” cathedral in Galveston needs lots of work. Im hoping that the people of the diocese can find a way to support a renovation. The structure was built in the mid 1800s, was the only church to survive the 1900 hurricane and still has mass said in it daily.

I was able to watch much of the dedication last night on my dvr. There were 5 cardinals present, and 20+ Bishops including all the Bishops and Archbishops from Texas

The local media coverage has been excellent, including many front page articles
