Well now ESPN is reporting that Patriots’ offensive coordinator Charlie Weis has accepted a 6 year deal coaching the Irish. I know there are quite a few Notre Dame fans on CAF - what do you all think of this? What are your thoughts on Ty’s rather abrupt dismissal? Optimistic about next season?

GO IRISH!!!

All I have to say is DePaul 84 Notre Dame 73.

Long live Ray Meyer!

I can’t wait till the Blue Demons join the Big East next year.

I don’t know a whole lot about this Charlie Weis fellow, and I really think our buddies in South Bend could have waited a bit longer for a coach. I never really believed in hiring an assistant coach to be a head coach no matter if they’re upsizing or downsizing or whatever.

As for Coach Willingham, well I don’t know what to say. They should have given him more of a chance, but he should have won games that he didn’t (i.e. Boston College!!!)

All I have to say is Brady Quinn for Heisman in '06, Darius Walker for Heisman in '07!

Charlie Weis was only responsible for the New England Patriot offense that won 2 Superbowls in the last 3 years, has established the Patriots as the most winning Franchise in the new millenium, and mentored Tom Brady into 2 Superbowl MVPs. He has been under the tutelage of Bill Belichek (the best head coach in the NFL, currently) for the last 3 years. I think he is more than qualified to be head coach of the Irish.

I think Ty was let go too early. They lost some close games but won some tough ones. Weiss is a good choice and will bring me right back next year. I hope it’s true. Go Irish!

As a huge ND fan, I was a little disappointed that Ty was not given the respect of finishing out his contract. Having said that, I like Weis. I would love to see ND return to its glory. Unlike the popular sports media, I do not think that its best days are behind them, even as they uphold their commitment to academics.

S.J.:
they uphold their commitment to academics.
I’ve accepted that this is their biggest “problem” and I’m willing to live with it. They’re not just pumping out illiterate athletes.

True, but he has no head coaching experience, and Notre Dame is NOT the place you want to start. Maybe he could have started somewhere smaller to get some experience… just imagine if he loses his first five games or so. The Irish alums/fans will be all over him unfairly! But, of course, then he has a contract.

Hey Silent Rick, GO EAGLES! :clapping: :clapping: :dancing: :dancing:
Kathy
By the way I’m sorry we are loosing Weis :crying:

OK, so who wants to explain to me why anybody (other than alumni) would actually WANT to be a fan of ND?

Given, I’m a biased DePaul basketball fan and the longstanding rivalry plays into my prejudiced detestation for them, but still, I just don’t get it. Sure, they were once the pride of Catholics on the up and come. But nowadays why should we care any more about them than whoever the local team is? I’d rather root for Northwestern.

Hi Chicago, I’ve become so disgusted with pro sports I decided to start watching college ball a few years ago. I didn’t go to a 1A college and there’s really no local team near me. Syracuse is very far, I have just as much of a chance of going to a ND game as a Syracuse game.

The spirit of the game is so much more alive in college. It would beat the pros in ratings if there were a playoff instead of this ridiculous BCS nonsense.

Oh, I agree in preferring college sports. Yet, still the question of “why Notre Dame” remains.

They are televised alot and their a Catholic school. They have a great history even though the future is gray right now. Living on Long Island my options are limited. Please don’t suggest Rutgers…

ND is the national Catholic college and, along with Boston College, the only to participate in Div. 1 football. I agree with the other sentiments posted here - the history, prior success, commitment to academic excellence, etc are the reasons the school resonates for many of us. Even though USC is catching up, no other school has produced as many Heisman trophy winners. I also think it is important for a Catholic university to have a high profile.

BTW, one can like more than one school - I like most of the Catholic schools - including DePaul. 👍

No head coach started as a head coach. They all start as assistants somewhere until someone takes a shot on them. Charlie Wies has mentored under both Bill Parcells and recently Bill Belichek and has been part of 2 of the last 3 (possibly 3 of the last 4) Superbowls.

That’s a huge deal. Tough to go from being a true “coach” to being more of an administrator, dealing with the NCAA stuff, academics, recruiting etc. Less practice time. That’s not going to be easy.

Plus, last years recruiting class under Ty wasn’t all that steller. Couple that with Weis not getting to South Bend until…February (post SuperBowl??). That’s after signing day isn’t it?? Two underpar classes in a row in Division I Football?? No bueno.

Weis has a great offensive mind, but he’ll have to throw away half his NFL playbook and work with what he has. Not too many Tom Bradys out there to be that second coach on the field, you know??

Charlie, do nothing else…get the best QB you can, and build it from there over the next four years…it’s gonna take that long…at least.

Brady Quinn is good. Half his interceptions are receivers letting balls deflect off their hands and chest. If he had a reliable receiver next year would look more promising.

Again, I understand the history of Notre Dame as important to Catholics. And, obviously, they are the top Div 1 Catholic football school, with only BC there to compete with them in that regard. But why, today, should that matter much to us? Heck, most of the kids on the team probably aren’t even Catholic. Further, plenty of other Catholic schools have high profiles, just not in football. And I don’t see why or how ND should be considered the “national” Catholic school. NONSENSE! If anything, (and I’m not sure that there needs to be or should be such a “national Catholic school” in our day - there are plenty of good ones with nationally recognized reputations) that would ideally be the Pontifially recognized Catholic University of America (even though they have a lesser profile and standing than most.)

As for liking more than one Catholic school, that is nuts. It’s like saying that one can easily be both a Cubs and White Sox fan. Or rooting for the Yankees and Red Sox, too. Dodgers and Giants. Cubs and Cardinals. Next to impossible! You’re just wishy-washy! 😛

As a DePaul fan, I have a moral obligation to hate Notre Dame, Loyola, Marquette, St. John’s, and Georgetown. (Also Louisville, Kansas, and UCLA, more recently Cincinnatti - but they aren’t Catholic schools). Those are the rivals and that is the way it works!

I’m happy to see ND football doing so poorly and will be till the day I die! May they never recover from this grand fall from grace. 😉

I don’t understand your post. You asked why Notre Dame. I gave you an answer. I never said I was a fan of multiple schools. As a DePaul fan it may be awhile before you see a football championship.

I’ll be expecting your public apologies when they win the Sugar Bowl in 2 years.
