New Evangelization To Be The Focus Of U.S. Bishops’ Meeting with Theologians

WASHINGTON — In an effort to make Catholic universities a fulcrum of the New Evangelization, the U.S. bishops’ Doctrine Committee will meet with theological societies in Washington, D.C., to address impediments to fruitful collaboration and clarify the need for effective catechesis.

On March 16, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore, Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit, and Bishop John Barres of Allentown, Pa., will address members of U.S. theological societies at a closed-door meeting at The Catholic University of America.

Interesting. Later in the article, the statement is made that dissenting theologians who teach such things in their classes will be part of the ongoing discussion. I see this as a very good thing and give the Bishops full marks on this.

Franciscan University didn’t have to come up with some sort of evangelization plan, they simply made sure their university was actually Catholic. Benedictine College found themselves on the verge of shutting their doors, had a reputation as a party school, and had almost no life in the Faith on campus other than the monks and local sisters. Their solution was to re-emphasize the Faith in all aspects of the university experience.

In thinking about this, I cannot help but believe that if we focus on making sure that Catholic schools are authentically Catholic, that their role in the New Evangelization will pretty much take care of itself.
