We’ve been over a year without a bishop…I don’t know much about Bishop Hurley (just what his Curriculum Vitae says
)–does anyone out there have any comments? The following is the press release:

*GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 21, 2005 – *Pope Benedict XVI announced today the appointment of Bishop Walter A. Hurley, D.D. as the 11th bishop for the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
Bishop Hurley, 68, has served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit since 2003.
**On behalf of Cardinal Adam Maida, Archbishop of Detroit and Apostolic Administrator ****of Grand Rapids, Father William H. Duncan, vicar general, held a news conference today at ****10:30 a.m., Rose Room, St. Henry Spirituality and Ministry Center, 670 Burton St., SE, Grand **Rapids to introduce Bishop Hurley.
Bishop Hurley succeeds Bishop Kevin M. Britt who died May 2004. “During his forty years of priestly and episcopal ministry, Bishop Hurley has distinguished himself as a faithful and caring servant with a deep love for the Church,” said Cardinal Adam Maida.
“While I shall miss his good counsel and support, I am truly delighted that he will now shepherd a flock of his own along the shores of Lake Michigan. I am confident that the Diocese of Grand Rapids will be richly blessed by his ministry in the years to come.”
Bishop Hurley is a canon lawyer and is the regional bishop for the Northwest Region of the Archdiocese (Oakland and Lapeer Counties) and serves as the Delegate of the Cardinal for Clergy Misconduct issues.
"We are very grateful that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Hurley to shepherd our diocesan church,” said Reverend William Duncan. “During Bishop Hurley’s recent visits to our diocese this past spring, many clergy and lay people remarked how nice it would be to have him as our bishop. I am very pleased to see that such hopes are now realized with his appointment. We welcome Bishop Hurley with great joy.”
BishopHurley was born May 30, 1937 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1965 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Detroit. Bishop Hurley was ordained a bishop August 12, 2003. He will be installed the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids August 4, 2005 at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Grand Rapids.
