We’ve been over a year without a bishop…I don’t know much about Bishop Hurley (just what his Curriculum Vitae says:o )–does anyone out there have any comments? The following is the press release:

**POPE BENEDICT XVI APPOINTS DETROIT AUXILIARY BISHOP **BISHOP FOR DIOCESE OF GRAND RAPIDS

*GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 21, 2005 – *Pope Benedict XVI announced today the appointment of Bishop Walter A. Hurley, D.D. as the 11th bishop for the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

Bishop Hurley, 68, has served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit since 2003.

**On behalf of Cardinal Adam Maida, Archbishop of Detroit and Apostolic Administrator ****of Grand Rapids, Father William H. Duncan, vicar general, held a news conference today at ****10:30 a.m., Rose Room, St. Henry Spirituality and Ministry Center, 670 Burton St., SE, Grand **Rapids to introduce Bishop Hurley.

Bishop Hurley succeeds Bishop Kevin M. Britt who died May 2004. “During his forty years of priestly and episcopal ministry, Bishop Hurley has distinguished himself as a faithful and caring servant with a deep love for the Church,” said Cardinal Adam Maida.

“While I shall miss his good counsel and support, I am truly delighted that he will now shepherd a flock of his own along the shores of Lake Michigan. I am confident that the Diocese of Grand Rapids will be richly blessed by his ministry in the years to come.”

Bishop Hurley is a canon lawyer and is the regional bishop for the Northwest Region of the Archdiocese (Oakland and Lapeer Counties) and serves as the Delegate of the Cardinal for Clergy Misconduct issues.

"We are very grateful that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Hurley to shepherd our diocesan church,” said Reverend William Duncan. “During Bishop Hurley’s recent visits to our diocese this past spring, many clergy and lay people remarked how nice it would be to have him as our bishop. I am very pleased to see that such hopes are now realized with his appointment. We welcome Bishop Hurley with great joy.”

BishopHurley was born May 30, 1937 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1965 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Detroit. Bishop Hurley was ordained a bishop August 12, 2003. He will be installed the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids August 4, 2005 at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Grand Rapids.

Bishop Kevin Britt served as bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids from October 2003 to May 2004. Bishop Robert J. Rose served as ninth bishop of Grand Rapids from 1989 to 2003.

The Diocese of Grand Rapids serves more than 162,000 Catholics in 102 parishes and missions in its eleven counties.

St Felicity,

Here is a similar thread I started yesterday. It is not getting much attention yet.

HEY FELLOW GRAND RAPIDIAN!

Greetings from St. Pius in Grandville:
Don’t know anything about him, but thought I’d join you with a quick prayer for his spiritual success in taking on our diocese.

Lord, grant Bishop Hurley the grace to guide our diocese with strength and wisdom. Help him follow our Blessed Mother’s lead by pointing all souls to you.
Amen

Greetings to you too!–I’m from St. Simon’s in Ludington.

Hey, TZiggy—I have attended a few Masses at St. Pius X in Grandville…I was a member of Sacred Heart on the west side. (Lovely noon Tridentine Mass every Sunday over there, yanno.) Before that I was at Holy Trinity in Comstock Park. I also used to frequent St. Alphonsus and St. Isidore, depending on my work schedule. 🙂

And st_felicity—I was a member of St. Simon’s in Ludington for a few years, too. 🙂 (Kind of a shame that they tore down St. Stanislaus…I liked that old church, and my neice was married there.) I lived in Scottville and was the manager of the Angelus Bookstore on Ludington Avenue and Rath for a while.

And now I’m at St. Patrick’s in Grand Haven.

I’m staying tuned on these Hurley threads. My “redneck” house (see redneck thread) is in Newaygo County . . .

I am, too. If Bishop Hurley turns out to be as good as Bishop Rose, I will be satisfied. 🙂

I would greatly prefer not to see a repeat of Bishop Breitenbeck, however…

So, how is he doing? I’ve just now read this thread - I could have answered back in June, since I knew him very well for many years while he was pastor at our local parish.

So, again, how is Bishop Hurley doing? I’m very curious.

Thanks in advance!

My first encounter with the inside of a Catholic Church was at age 12 (1962) and that is what led me to the Catholic Faith. It was St. Alphonsus. I have a (centenial?) book and the restoration looks beautiful. However, I noticed that in the credits section, credit was given to one or two people who were responsible for the liturgical dance. Has LD final departed St. Alphonsus?

Also, never been in St. Adalberts. Just curious at to what you pick up on that parish when you google it. Does not sound good. I always wanted to go in but, only saw the beautiful structure from the expressway.

St. Isidore was my (polish) boyfriend’s parish. They were disturbed at the changes after VII. Hopefully, the inside has not been renovated in a poor way.

Sure do miss those beautiful churches in GR…miss GR in general.
