Using firearms entails more than pulling a trigger or even aiming as the user should:
Firstly avoid situations where risk to their personal safety could be high
Identify the threat.
Assess the risk of using the firearm.
Try to avoid using the firearm.
Only when they have no choice, use the firearm effectively.
Your points are well spoken, thank you for them. This is exactly why I advocate that owners need to get good safety training. Not sure about what they do in South Africa where you are, but here in the USA the best place to get firearms training is from an NRA Certified Training Instructor. They can start with basic safety classes and can proceed from there with more advanced classes. The NRA often is looked down upon but it is the largest safety training organization here in the USA.

In addition to safety training for gun owners, they also have excellent courses in training without firearms like their “Refuse to be a Victim” classes that teach people how to better stay out of harms way, be aware of their surroundings, etc. Right now there are many groups offering discount memberships. Or people can get memberships directly from the NRA : membership.nrahq.org/forms/signup.asp

The page to their educational services is here: nrahq.org/education/index.asp

The page to their Women’s services is here:

The page for their Eddie the Eagle program that teaches small children NOT to even touch a gun is here:

Yeah my Marine son and his buddies are all getting their own guns for the first time. My son’s orthodontist, a young woman, told me she was going to buy a gun and take lessons, too!
I have a neighbor, in case the Obama Youth decide to plunder and terrorize.
Obama wants to have a civilian military force for some reason!!

That is another reason for the gun run.

Better hurry! You may not be able to get a conceil carry permit after January:(
I feel that citizen ownership is very important for the wellbeing of our great nation.

Well there is some evidence from England and Australia that should be viewed. If you are NOT an ACTIVE member of a gun rights group, and by active I mean willing, able and committed to writing letters to your public officials, making phone calls, and also convincing your gun owning friends to do the same, the you really need to watch this video.

Here is a video from Military.com. It is fairly long, dial up users beware. It documents the gun CONFISCATIONS in both England and Australia.

In SA, many of the men have done at least two years military service during conscription, so they have some training.

However, personal protection as a private citizen is a different matter!

Firearm competency is a prerequisite for ownership now and there are many accredited training organisations.

The new Firearm Act is prohibitive to owning firearms as the new regime is attempting to disarm the populace in the midst of massive violent crime, particularly on farmers.

Well should our government ever try this, I know for a fact me or my family will never hand over our guns. We will bury them on our land if we have to…but we wont be turning them in. I know that the Americans who do own guns (especially here in the south) wont hand them over either. I would pay good money to see what would happen if the government came to Texas to take our guns…yeah it would be the Alamo all over again.

Well should our government ever try this…
It’s already happened, in California. It started with a gun registration program, supposedly to fight crime. Then they began banning certain kinds of guns, and used those records to find out who had them, and took them away.

I’m with ya, TravisandJill!

If I recall correctly it was SKS rifles in California that they did that with? If so, that is an odd choice of guns to ban, but I did hear of confiscation of at least one model.

It strikes me that politicians tend to ‘divide and conquer’ the gun owners by demonizing one type of gun, then they move on to another. They use ‘catch phrases’ like “Sniper Rifle” or “Assault Weapon” or “Gunshow Loophole.” These are very misleading terms.

Did you know that the gunshow loophole has almost nothing to do with gunshows but a lot to do with passing down a gun to your grandchild or your child?!?

And while some politicians say that “assault weapons” only belong on foreign battlefields, that absolutely NONE of the guns we can buy today are used in combat by ANY foreign government?

This is not entirely true.

I live in California and own more than one SKS in legal configurations. After the California assault weapons ban that was passed in I believe 1989 that banned weapons by name, they first said that the SKS was exempt and that people did not have to register it. After the end of the registration period, they said that they had misinterpreted the law and that any SKS with a detachable magazine was considered an “assault weapon”. None of these were registered and they refused to open up a new registration period. They did a buy back where the government would buy them from you. You could either do the buy back or put a fixed magazine on your SKS if it had been modified to take detachable magazines. Since there was no registration on them, the government had no way of knowing if you actually complied. So far there has been no confiscation of registered “assault weapons” in CA. Most people do not know this, but if you put a detachable magazine on any SKS that was imported with a fixed magazine (pretty much any of them other than the Norinco Sporter which takes AK mags) you are breaking a federal law (922r) which requires an imported weapon that has been modified to have a certain number of US made parts on it. You can change out enough parts in the SKS to make it 922r compliant, but I don’t find it to be worth the cost.

California has actually had a few victories in the courts recently. We are expecting to win another one or two in the next few months post D.C. Vs. Heller. I can not say any more about it right now, but I am confident that in the not too distant future, CA gun owners will have a good day. I currently own a California compliant AR-15 style rifle as well as a compliant AK style rifle. I have a CCW and an FFL-03. Don’t get me wrong, we have just about the worst laws in the nation, but it could be worse. There is a strong group of us here that is fighting very hard. We can use all the support (at least your prayers) from outsiders that we can get. Remember, California tends to be a trend setter for the rest of the nation. Please do not write us off yet.

Oh I don’t think anyone is writing you off yet. In fact I see over on the “CALGUNS” website that the shooting community is alive and well in your state and hopefully, with the help of the internet and other resources, getting better organized for the fights.

It also appears that there is a wide range of public sentiment on the side of self defense and there is a growing trend across the US for person protection, including carrying of guns.

Here is an interesting poll from MSNBC, it is an ongoing poll, so if you check it the numbers may change, as this graphic below is just a snapshot, but it clearly shows that people are not afraid of HONEST citizens who own a gun and carry it responsibly.

Good to hear that Cali gun owners are fighting back and winning. Praise God!

I had gun training 2 years ago from a former marine…it was the best money I ever spent. I was so scared because I hadn’t even shot a gun before and by the end of the lesson I had shot 3 different guns, including an AR-15:D

My husband and I now own 4 guns and are looking for a few more before we cant buy them anymore:mad:

Hubby and I also have our Texas conceil carry and I highly reccommend you get one if you can.

We are kinda bummed that Obama will ban alot of guns when he becomes president, but hopefully he screws the country up so bad that in four years a conservative gets elected into office to undo all his mistakes:p

Thinking about getting hubby a desert eagle for christmas. Think he can handle a 50 cal?😛

Jill
Where can you find a 50 cal. Desert Eagle? My dad is looking for one and I can only find it in the Internet. I agree with you about Barack Hussein Obama. He will try to restrict guns and violate our 2nd Amendment rights. That is why I would vote for McCain and Palin.

I believe that every one that has never owned one before needs to be trained by an officially licensed firearm trainer. I as a child grew up with guns in the house. My father made sure i knew how to shoot a rifle. he told me i needed to just, in case i was in need of using one. by this i mean shooting for food. also, my dad, was old school. he was born in the depression days in the south. you had to own a gun to survive. he instilled this in me.
