**Institute established at New Brighton shrine church to open second UK foundation in Preston this year **

The young religious order that was installed in a shrine church in the Wirral is to establish a second community in England.

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest will establish a foundation at St Walburge’s Church, Preston, in the autumn – some two-and-a-half years after founding its first UK community at Ss Peter and Paul and St Philomena, New Brighton.

The Rt Rev. Michael Campbell, Bishop of Lancaster, announced on Sunday that the landmark city centre church – which has the highest spire in the country bar Salisbury Cathedral – will become a shrine church dedicated to Eucharistic Adoration, and providing Holy Mass and other Sacraments in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

In March 2012 the Institute established their first English foundation at the New Brighton at the invitation of the Rt Rev. Mark Davies, the Bishop of Shrewsbury. The church was then also dedicated a shrine with the purpose of promoting Eucharistic Adoration and providing a centre for worship in the Extraordinary Form.

Bishop Campbell said that the agreement between Mgr Gilles Wach, General Prior of the Institute, and parish priest Fr Simon Hawksworth, meant that the church will now be open every day with Eucharistic Adoration.

Jesus, God and man,
imprisoned by love in Thy most holy Sacrament,
have mercy upon us.
  • Blessed John Henry Newman, December 22, 1851
God loves to be resisted in His displeasure, and to be restrained by the humble from inflicting punishment… One saint will often save a nation; so true is it that humble souls are the hinges on which God moves the world.

I attend Mass at Ss Peter and Paul and St Philomena. The institute have been very well received since their arrival a few years ago and do so much to raise awareness of the EF and traditional Catholicism in general. The new apostolate at St Walburge’s Church, Preston is great for the North West region in general but also for the Canon at Ss Peter and Paul and St Philomena, as he travels up and down the motorway each Sunday to celebrate Mass in both towns.

Overall, this is brilliant news!

I attend the Latin Mass in Preston supplied from Saints Peter, Paul and Philomena. It is indeed good news. At the moment the Latin Mass community I attend has been given very few details about how things will operate, a lot has yet to be finalised. As pointed out in one of the articles, St Walburge’s already has an OF Mass on Sunday, at midday, which it seems is going to be continued. But that leaves plenty of time to at least have a Low Mass earlier in the morning.

It was explained at Mass last Sunday that the Institute recalls their Priests to Gricigliano in September each year, where they are given their ‘posts’ for the forthcoming year. Hopefully more information will become available following the Priests assignments.

This was also mentioned last weekend when I attended the Institute Mass near Preston, the priest for St Walburge’s hasn’t been assigned yet but may be named at this meeting in September.
