Sister Demjanovich, a nun who belonged to the Byzantine-rite, died in 1927 when she was 26. The Vatican-approved miracle needed for her to be beatified occurred when a third-grade boy who was incurably blind was spontaneously cured without any medical treatment in 1963, through prayers for her intercession. She is the first person to be beatified in the U.S. itself, after Pope Benedict began allowing beatifications outside Rome a few years ago.
