Santa Fe, NM, Mar 14, 2017 / 05:01 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- New Mexico Bishops released a statement last week discouraging public advocacy from Catholic legislators for abortions and assisted suicide on behalf of their Catholic faith.
“We are concerned by public statements by some legislators that seem to say that a faithful Catholic can support abortion or doctor-assisted suicide,” New Mexico’s bishops stated March 6.
“Support for abortion or doctor-assisted suicide is not in accord with the teachings of the Church. These represent the direct taking of human life, and are always wrong.”

Thanks for posting this. I wish more bishops would do the same. These Catholic leaders who support are certainly giving the church a bad name and leaves us open for much criticism from the secular MSM.

The Catholic bishops of the state of New Mexico have joined in a statement rejecting the idea that a Catholic politician can support legal abortion or assisted suicide.

Well, it’s about time someone talked about scandal.
Their statement points in the right direction, but (going only by the Catholic Culture report), it’s not strong enough.
These individuals are public sinners who have excommunicated themselves, and they should be publicly named (at the very least, at Mass) and condemned for their actions. For their own sake, if not for that of these politicians, the faithful should see no-nonsense decisive acts by the bishops. They’re long overdue.
These politicians don’t take the Church seriously, and it’s about time they did!!!

In the November elections, Kaine gave me the horrors!!! Biden…

Some posters here need to read this!
A lot of Catholics need to read this. But instead, they’ve got their made-ready excuses fresh from the secular godless post-modernists.

One of my personal favourites is “worker’s rights”.

The other is “planned parenthood is the fault of the GOP because they are capitalist”.

It really is quite sensational what they are coming up with as their valued institutions and “friends” move farther and farther away from the Church. :rotfl:

Perhaps it’s better to do things old-school, publicly shame them.

I wish the bishops would address the skyrocketing costs of choosing life and maternity leave - unreasonably expensive costs, even WITH insurance, that are difficult to justify in a “pro-life” culture. Aren’t delivery costs any less expensive in Catholic hospitals?

It’s easy to be “pro-life” when you only limit the term to be anti-abortion. Being “pro-life” for the unborn baby’s mommy…a little more difficult.

Precisely. I’ve known some people (and come across some posters here) who call themselves pro-life but regard expectant mothers, especially the unmarried ones, with utter contempt. Abortion is a monstrous act, make no mistake. At the same time, it is very easy to dictate what women should do when you don’t have to deal with the fallout of having a baby that you don’t have the resources to care for.

Have you never heard of adoption?

We expect the Bishops to speak on this without fear which is the heart of Catholic belief. Good for them.

At this point, I don’t think anything will make them take those earplugs out.
Probably so.

I agree with an earlier poster. They are in direct opposition to the church.

Sorry, but somebody needs to start reminding them about the term “self-excommunication.”
