New Missal Not Here Yet, but Catholics Urged to Start Talking About It

WASHINGTON (CNS) – The new English translation of the Roman Missal might not be in U.S. parishes for as long as two years, but Father Rick Hilgartner hopes Catholics are talking about it now.

why is USCBB involved in this when they are the ones being called liberals and have not been truthfull to the Church’s teachings?
 
Why are we being encouraged to talk about about something we have not seen?

That is why it’s been out for several months now ( at least all the parts for the Common of the Mass… the stuff we say every Sunday)

And that is why we have several months to read and learn it.

Its not that much stuff to get use. I starting going to an Anglican Use parish over a year ago and they were already using “with thy spirit” and “lord i am not worthy that thy shall come under my roof”…Took me only a couple of times to get use to the phrasing.
 
sometimes i read and dont quite understand. how many options is there? who chooses, the priest? which version to use for the Mass. or the priest simply uses different parts on different days?

The options are generally the exact same as what we have now.

For example, the Penitential Rite.

There is Form A " I confess to Almighty God…"

Form B ( no one really uses that)

Form C ( A Kyrie\Lord Have Mercy with interjected lines, called tropes)

Which one that is to be used is selected by the celebrant.

Then there are the Eucharistic Prayers. The celebrant also choses those, but since we don’t say those prayers, we would not have to learn them.

A there is also the Memorial Acclamation. Those are commonly chosen by the organist\cantor with (name removed by moderator)ut from the priest. The only exception there is “Christ has died, Christ is Risen…” is no longer an option, as that one never existed in the Mass as published by Rome. It is a US invention. The US bishops have requested that it be retained, but Rome has not ruled on that yet ( to my knowledge)

Things like the Gloria and Creed are said at the same times and on the same days as they are currently said. The Gloria is said on Sundays and Solemnties outside of Advent or Lent. The Creed is said on Sundays and Solemnities.

thanks. let’s hope that things will change. those prayers are beautifull. another thing i noticed is that there is no more sign of peace among the people. it is right?

I have a 1964 Missal “Vatican II Edition” the English version before it was “desacrilised”. It has the original Confetior*. Instead of “Cleanse my heart and my lips . . .” it has a longer prayer that starts “Almighty God, cleanse my lips as You cleansed the lips of Your prophet Isaiah with a burning coal . . .” There’s just more to it throughout.

You get the idea. The ICEL is an improvement but why not go back to the original fresh-from-the-spirit-of-Vatican-II translation?

Amen.

That is if you don’t mind every page is stamped STUDY TEXT ONLY. Sheesh! Is the USCCB really afraid that people are going to print the whole thing out and put it in three-ring binders to lug to church instead of buying a new missal?

i think this has been going for what? 10 yrs now? USCCB apparently did not want any change. as one can see not one word in Latin in the new Missal.

how about the hymns is it going to stay the same?
 
This is a wonderful improvement. I don’t know why they made so many changes in the first place. This is true to the Latin text:

And with thy spirit - Et cum Spiritu tuo.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks
Laudamus te, Beneditimus te, Adoramus te, Glorificamus Te, Gratias agimus tibi

I am SO glad this is changing.

Wait a minute. They are giving us the English translation, why would you expect to see Latin in it?
The Roman Missal will be like it is now: Latin on one side, English on the other. That allows the priest to choose which language he wants for any given prayer.
