My vote has ALWAYS been for The Confraternity Bible (the ENTIRE 5 volume set - 4 OT volumes and 1 NT volume) - NOT the Duoay-Confraternity combination that 99.99% of people have what they think is the Confraternity version.

The irony is that the Confraternity Bible is actually the precursor to the NAB . . . 😦

please tell me the psalms have been retranslated to keep their character as sung poetry and the accuracy of the language, so they can be used in liturgy
It’s the other way around, the translation is even more PC and they didn’t even tough the very problematic commentary.

Here is the De profundis (source):
Prayer for Pardon and Mercy
1A song of ascents.
I
Out of the depths* I call to you, LORD;
2Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.a
3If you, LORD, keep account of sins,
Lord, who can stand?**(“http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/psalms-130.shtml#23130003-b”)
4But with you is forgiveness
and so you are revered.*
II
5I wait for the LORD,
my soul waits
and I hope for his word.c
6My soul looks for the Lord
more than sentinels for daybreak.d
More than sentinels for daybreak,
7let Israel hope in the LORD,
For with the LORD is mercy,
with him is plenteous redemption,e
8And he will redeem Israel
from all its sins.f
Compared to the Douay-Rheims’s version:
1 Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord:
2 Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
3 If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it.
4 For with thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law, I have waited for thee, O Lord. My soul hath relied on his word:
5 My soul hath hoped in the Lord.
6 From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
7 Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with him plentiful redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
It is amazing how the Douay-Rheims has so much more meaning packed into just about the same number of words as the NABRE.

Also, it still seems strange to me that any Bible be copyrighted

The NABRE - Much Ado About Nothing. It’s ironic that no Catholic Bible can be found in the stores that corresponds to the Lectionary used at Mass, especially since the bishop’s conference holds the copyright. Interestingly, this latest version wasn’t sent to the Holy See for approval. Guess why?
-it retains the 1986 NT which contains such “scholarly” gems as: Romans 5:12, “as sin came into the world through one MAN”, “man” is changed to “PERSON” even though “MAN” refers to a specific person and is not being used as a generic. Not even the NRSV does that!
-Mark 9:36 “And he took a child, and put HIM in the midst,” 'HIM" is changed to “IT”. The child is neuterized. Both examples the result of, not scholarship, but feminist ideology.
-in Isaiah “VIRGIN” is changed to 'YOUNG WOMAN" A young woman having a child is quite common, hardly a “sign.”
-also in the OT, the “IDEAL WIFE” changed to “POEMS ON THE WOMAN OF WORTH.” We are told, “Women will like this: being measured by their OWN ACCOMPLISHMENTS, not in terms of a husband’s perspective.” Scholarship?
-The Book of Psalms uses the Revised Psalms, which the Holy See rejected, as a base text. They removed the vertical feminist language, but kept the rest.
This product was produced by many of the people who gave us the defective RNAB, e.g., Fr. Jensen OSB, who makes no secret of his commitment to feminist language and is a major critic of the Holy See’s attempts to ensure fidelity of translation.
In short, skip this "translation"and stay with the DR or the RSV-CE 2nd edition.
You nailed it…makes you shake your head in wonder doesn’t it?

You’re kidding about this, right? Pro-life Catholics, e.g., don’t consider children "it"s and “things” to dispose of. May God have mercy on us all.

Apparently the D-R renders it “it,” too. Perhaps we should all learn Latin. It is quite an amazing language for those wishing actually to connect with Catholic tradition.

just a quick question which translation would be the best one to go with? i started using a NRSV with the apochcal book’s in the back of the old testament but it also includes i & 2nd ezdras the 51st psalm 3rd & 4th macahbes i may switch to using one from 63 or douay rhimis :bible1:

jbravo,

When asked, I will always defer to the Confraternity Bible (note: a TRUE Confraternity Bible - NOT a Douay-Confraternity “hybrid”).

You can look on Ebay and online used booksellers and obtain the entire Confraternity Bible by purchasing the individual volumes (as I did) that came out frm 1941 through 1969). Those volumes are shown here:

bibles.wikidot.com/confraternity

Or, you can have the equivalent of a Confraternity Bible by purchasing it as follows:

Method A

1941 NT - recently reprinted by Scepter: scepterpublishers.org/product/index.php?FULL=565

1970 NAB - for the OT translations that were published by the CCD from 1953-1969, except Genesis, which was retranslated in 1970 for the NAB (I have no idea why they retranslated only Genesis).

Method B

The Old Testament Confraternity-Douay Version
and The New Testament Confraternity Version - in one volume:
sinagtala.com/single_bibles_catechisms_holybible.htm

1970 NAB - for the last volume of the 1969 OT part of the Confraternity Bible that was incorporated into the 1970 NAB

Psalter

For the ONLY approved Psalter for liturgical use in the US (and it is a pretty good translation), I do not hesitate recommending the Revised Grail Psalter, which can be purchased here: giamusic.com/search_details.cfm?title_id=11263

I am confused
one poster says the retranslation was done to make proclamation during Mass better
another poster says this version won’t be used for the lectionary we are still at square 1, 1970, with the Grail Psalter
which is it?

I am not going to invest in 500 new bibles that are not at least in the main compatible with the lectionary since that is their primary use in our catechesis, which is partially lectionary-based.

puzzleannie,

Why do you think so many of us (just look at my posts) have complained about the lost opportunity the USCCB had with its NABRE?

We were given three chances to revise our Psalter and finally Rome stepped in and made the fourth correction by “special committee”. They finally approved the Revised Grail Psalter for use in America.

Unfortunately, although several responses will be changed in the Mass that will be noticeably different, the readings, themselves, will remain distinctly different when it comes to lectionary vs. bible.

THAT is what I have always asked: I understand that responses by the congregation might need to be reworded in minor ways to facilitate responding to a priest. But considering that reading a part of sacred scripture is just that - reading (except for the responses we take part in during the Passion of Holy Week) - why can’t the lectionary be identical to the bible or vice-versa (if one is closer to an accurate biblical translation than the other)? To date, I have had no explanations on this exact question.

So, the NABRE does no different than what we Catholics in the US have been doing regarding the lectionary for years: we will hear readings that are distinctly different from the biblical verses they are supposed to be repeating. 😦

Do not get rid of your old NABs yet! The OT and NT are staying the same (for now), the only change to the Lectionary on Advent 2011 will be the addition of the Revised Grail Psalms which will replace the 1970 NAB psalms. I am going to continue to use the old NAB for Bible Study and RCIA (since both of these are lectionary based).

im sticking more to DR i’ll order a new DR because the one im useing now is faded in print & plus the RSV ce 2nd ed 👍😛

Can you provide more info Geremia? Neither my D-R (a typical version with notes by Bishop Challoner) nor the online New Advent D-R replace “him” with “it” in this verse.

this is how it reads in the DR verision im using MARK 9:35…And taking ,He set Him in the mdst of them

I’m sorry, but I was referring to 3 Kings 3:16-28, where a child is constantly referred to as “it” in the D-R:[BIBLEDRB]3 Kings 3:16-28[/BIBLEDRB]Verse 26 in the NAB uses “it” instead of “him” as well.

Where did you get that info regarding the New Grail Psalms? I was under the impression that the music settings for the New Grail Psalms were not ready yet, and that the Psalms use in Mass would stay the same.

info on this thread is still too contradictory (and injecting info on other translations besides the NAB and NABRE is not particularly helpful) so I will wait for further relevant info.
