Fair point. I keep making the mistake of thinking that news shows should actually include something of substance. I guess they have to play to their core audience in order to make the meter spin.

I know I am completely cynical when it comes to the media, but I can’t help but think that, on some deep, sub-conscious level, the reporters are a bit disappointed that the storm hasn’t been WORSE. All morning, they’ve had their cameras trained on the levees, which appear to be holding, although water is cresting over top. NOTHING like the deluge we witnessed with Katrina. But if you listen closely to the reporters, they focus on the “chance and possibility” that the levees might still fail. And my, what a story that would make, right?

you are right blessedtoo, they want nothing more than to have a big story to report on and they speak of doom and gloom predictions.
they do get disappointed if the storm doesn’t develop into the storm of the century.
we were reminded though, that it was the day after katrina that the levees broke when they could not withstand the force of the water anymore.
so hang on, there is still a chance that something can happen tomorrow . . .

I suspect if not for Katrina this would not have been such a big story. Category three hurricanes hitting the Gulf Coast are not that uncommon.

you are probably right. what bothers me about the hurricane coverage is they start covering it when it is beginning out in the ocean far away and the coverage builds and builds as it approaches and they begin forcasting way too early where they think the hurricane will end up and the news gets scarier and scarier and scarier as the predictions get worse and worse.
so it is like 7 or 8 days of media build up and by that time everyone is in a frenzy.

Yesterday we were told this was the mother of all storms. Today it hits the coast hits the coast as a marginal category three.

Better forewarned. A bit of gas to get people out of the way. Better than the last example.
As someone who lives in the mountains of PA, I am still a bit of a cynic when it comes to people living within a mile of our coasts. I truly pray for them all, and I hope they will see the obvious.
Thank God that Gustav did not hit as it could have.

yes and the speculators go crazy! I hope everyone has filled up their gas tanks by now…tomorrow when you head to work…you may be surprised at the prices you see. Also, Hanna is on the way…to be on the east coast by Friday…
I am glad the folks in the New Orleans area decided to leave.

Right. I have absolutely no problem with the local government scaring the pants of the populace. I sat and watched as Katrina unfolded (parents and sis live in the panhandle) and screamed at the TV while the mayor and the governor behaved as though it were nothing more than a bad thunderstorm heading their way. Those who live in these areas do not take warnings seriously unless strong language and scare tactics are used.
My complaint is the news “reporters” who speculate endlessly (what does Wolf Blitzer know about hurricanes?) about **whether **the levees will hold or **if **the 9th Ward will flood or will people start looting again. If it ain’t happening, why are they talking about it? The goal is to inject as much psuedo-drama into every stinking moment - no matter how mundane. Why can’t they just report the news rather than invent it?
From now on where hurricanes are concerned, it’s the Weather Channel exclusively for me.
