New Parish - Please Help

My wife and I will be retiring in a few years and will also be relocating. We are looking for a good Catholic parish within 4-5 hour driving distance of Baltimore, MD. My goal is to be debt free so we will be looking for a decent house for less than $150K. I know thats a stretch, but the house doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a simple home in a decent neighborhood. The church is the most important thing though. Eucharistic Adoration would be great with a priest that presents reliably authentic teaching. Any suggestions.
 
Well, if you would like to live in Baltimore County, you could look at Parkville-Carney, ZIP code 21234. There are lots of nice, modest houses in that area. The parish that serves this area is St. Ursula’s, which has very orthodox priests and is very active. There is another parish a few miles away that has perpetual adoration, Immaculate Conception in Towson. You can get links to these parishes from the website for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

If you want a more rural area, Westminster is very nice, and about an hour from Baltimore to the West. St. John’s is a beautiful, but very large parish, also known for orthodoxy and being very active. They have a perpetual adoration chapel, if I recall correctly.

Is that time frame correct? :confused: Given a 4-5 hour driving range, one could, e.g, presumably live in or near, say, Harrisburg, PA, or (or even Baltimore) and attend a church in NYC.

Yeah, really. Five hours from Baltimore reaches about eight states; it could get you to Bridgeport, CT, Pittsburgh, PA, or Rocky Mount, NC, or Binghamton, NY. It pretty much covers the entire Mid-Atlantic region of the country.
 
I don’t think the OP is saying that he wants to drive 4-5 hours to church. He is looking for a home and church within 4-5 hours of Baltimore:

Draw a 300 or 400-mile radius circle around Baltimore and he wants to live in that circle.

Definitely. That’s why I suggested Gainesville or the surrounding area. That would be one heck of a commute if they actually wanted to drive it. :rotfl:

Thanks Betsy, St. Ursula’s looks like a great place. My daughter and her husband actually go to Immaculate Conception in Towson. Holy Trinity in Gainesville, VA also looks like a great place. I’ve actually got five years before I can collect SS. We’d like to be near our daughter and her husband and our new (1 month old) grandson, but we’re not sure we want to move back to the city. I have another daughter in the Navy who’ll probably be moving back to the Baltimore area next year because she wants to be near her little sister/best friend. This will be our last move above ground, so I want it to be a good one. Close to family and close to the Lord.
 
I’m glad you liked what you saw of Holy Trinity. You’ve got a lot of time to travel around and explore our suggestions before you actually make your move. Personally, I think you’ll be choosing something closer to family. 🙂

Possibly closer to home Fireman. The most affordable houses near St. Ursula’s are inside the Baltimore City line and have pretty high property taxes. Before we moved out of Baltimore City 4 years ago, we had a modest 70 year old single family home and were paying almost $2K a year in property taxes. Now they’re higher of course. There was a townhouse in my daughter’s neighborhood we looked at online and the property taxes were listed around $2,600. I’ll have to try and find out what the taxes would be on a comparable place near Holy Trinity.
 
You might want to check out Front Royal, Va. The parish , St. John the Baptist seems very traditional, offers the EF weekly and once or twice during the week. The town is right at the foot of the Skyline Drive. Right now real estate there is very reasonable. We are looking there as a possible place to retire.

get used to it, the closer you get to retirement age the less sense you make

good luck with your plan, we did it, and as of July 1 will be officially debt free in our new retirement home and living off one income that is actually about 60% less than our projected retirement income will be. That is because the resources generating that income are about 60% less than they were when we started out on this venture, but that’s another story. We like Texas but if we were looking on the East coast (closer to our kids) it would be in the area around Columbia S.C, equidistant from all our grandchildren.

We want to be closer to our kids, too. But with two in California and one in DC, equidistant would probably put us in Kansas! LOL! California is way too expensive so it is looking more and more like Front Royal for us.

Thank you; does look like a great parish and the real estate prices in the area seem reasonable. Thanks for the info; The church there will definitely be on our list to visit.

St John the Baptist Church is a good parish with a traditional pastor ( sjtb.org/ ) as is Christendom College’s church.

Great - maybe we’ll see you there. We’re planning on visiting St. John’s and Front Royal the last weekend in October, which will include our wedding anniversary. I’ll try and get in touch with someone from the parish beforehand who knows the area. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
