Quick question:
Can the UGCC appoint bishops other than its primate without interference from the Papacy?

Morning Liturgy on the feast of the Annunciation? tsk tsk tsk!I knew it was official when his name was in the commemoration at this morning’s Divine Liturgy.
MANY YEARS!
Why not? There were Great Vespers last night. I didn’t get to go though I wasn’t feeling well.Morning Liturgy on the feast of the Annunciation? tsk tsk tsk!
Dear Alex:Many Years to the new Patriarch of the UGCC!
He’s a young man (40 years old) but I’m glad our bishops don’t engage in age discrimination!
As for his name “Svyatoslav,” there are three Saints with that name - all of royal background. One is a monk of the Kyivan Caves Lavra, St Mykola-Svyatoslav, (FD Second Sunday of Lent and Second Sunday of Pentecost) a prince, who is also called “Svyatosha.”
Also, St Svyatoslav II, Great High King of Kiev-Rus’. (The word “Kniaz” is a Slavicized version of the Scandinavian term for king or “konigyaz.”) And another St Sviatoslav Prince of Vladimir (June 23).
What represented a good amount of progress here is that the Synod forwarded ONLY one name to Rome for ratification rather than three of which the Pope would choose one.
Pope Benedict approved the Synod’s choice immediately and without equivocation.
The next and final step would be for formal recognition of the UGCC Patriarchate by Rome with its right to elect whom it wishes as its Patriarch without Roman approval (and potential veto).
Many years to the new Patriarch and many years to the Synod, Clergy, Monastics and Laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church!
Alex
The order for services for the Feast of the Annunciation is Great Vespers, Great Compline with Litia, Mattins, and a Vesperal Liturgy on the day of the Feast itself. Why not? There were Great Vespers last night. I didn’t get to go though I wasn’t feeling well.
Well, you can take this up with the new PatriarchThe order for services for the Feast of the Annunciation is Great Vespers, Great Compline with Litia, Mattins, and a Vesperal Liturgy on the day of the Feast itself.
Annunciation is celebrated with an evening Liturgy because it is Lent, and an evening Liturgy allows for proper fasting throughout the day with the fast relaxed after the Liturgy, with fish, wine and oil allowed.
Hope your feeling better…and Happy Annunciation!
I may, next time I see him. From what I know of him he is pretty traditional when it comes to Liturgy!Well, you can take this up with the new Patriarch![]()
If St. Elias was jumping off a bridge…?Curious though that St. Elias has Matins at 8am and Divine Liturgy at 10am for the Feast of the Annunciation. If AM Divine Liturgy for the Feast is good enough for St. Elias, its good enough for us![]()
If jumping off a bridge means being orthodox/traditional…If St. Elias was jumping off a bridge…?![]()
I see that today is not the Feast of the Annunciation at St. Elias, but it is 13 days from now. I’ll need to have a look at the rubrics to see if there is a reason why they are doing it in the am…there are a lot of factors that play together especially with a feast in Lent.If jumping off a bridge means being orthodox/traditional…![]()
Father was talking about it this morning during Homily, and more elaborate after Liturgy. He said if their instructor in the seminary wants to fail them, he’ll ask them a question about celebrating Annunciation. In any case, I trust his and the Bishop’s knowledge on the matter and about this morning’s Divine Liturgy.I see that today is not the Feast of the Annunciation at St. Elias, but it is 13 days from now. The Ruthenian church should really return to it’s roots and rejoin the Ukrainians, then they too will have a Patriarch!Mnohaya i blahaya lita to our new patriarch! I’m Ruthenian so I’m technically not under his jurisdiction, but he’s the closest Patriarch there is to us, so he really is our spiritual father too, just like the Pope is a bit more remotely. I feel perfectly comfortable saying that we have gained a new patriarch no less than the Ukrainians have. His elevation is a blessing to all of us.
I suppose that one could spin a version of history that would allow that comment to make some sense. But it would remain unclear that one should really be telling a particular church what it should really do.The Ruthenian church should really return to it’s roots and rejoin the Ukrainians…![]()
