With the recent elections of the new patriarchs of the Coptic and Chaldean Churches, and now the Pope of Rome’s announcement today, it looks like the first few months of 2013 are seeing 3 of 11 “patriarchs” of the Catholic Church replaced. Interesting times.

(Note: I consider the Pope, the six canonical Eastern patriarchs, and the four major archbishops to be the “patriarchs” of the Catholic Communion for all functional intents and purposes).

Is it possible for the new pope to be a Catholic from one of the many non-Latin churches within the Catholic Church?

Personally, I’d like to see Cardinal Arinze be the next elected Pope.

Yes. IIRC an earlier conclave had the Armenian-Catholic Patriarch as an early contender.

Cardinal Hussar, of the UGCC, was considered in the last one, according to several cardinals.

And there have been non-roman Popes in the past - Alexandrian and Ambrosian both.

The only possible outcomes of the conclave that would shock me would be either an American or a Chinese cardinal, or a non-cardinal.

Could you tell me who the Alexandrian Pope of Rome was? 🙂

Are you thinking of Pope St Gelasius I who was born in the Roman province of Africa?
No, there’s another, from Alexandria proper, tho by his election he was resident in rome… But there have been 3 or 4 african popes of Rome.
