According to Giga–Catholic, the Holy Father appointed His Excellency, the Most Reverend Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Bishop of Regensburg in Germany, as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He is also ex officio President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the International Theological Commission, and the Pontifical Council Ecclesia Dei, and as an archbishop ad personam. He replaces His Eminence, the 76–year–old retiring Most Reverend William Joseph Cardinal Levada, the American former Archbishop of San Francisco.
