Hey Everyone,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I was sure where to put it. 🤷 So feel free to move it. 🙂

Ok, so long story short, I have a friend who is not too big on the New Roman Missal. He claims that the changes are technical, and pointless and that these is no justified reason for the changes. I like the changes, but other then my own personal opinion, I really have no idea of what to say to him to help him realize that the changes are worthwhile.

Help?

Thanks, and God Bless!

If he feels they are ‘technical’ then they really shouldn’t ‘bother’ him. There are some changes I like and some not so much, but the point is that this is a better translation of the Latin. Just the fact that people need to pay a little more attention, at least for a while, during Mass is a benefit for all, as far as I’m concerned.

I would tell your friend that when translated from Latin to English, the phrase “and with youir spirt” in English is the exact translation from Latin.

Rather than try and convince him he’s wrong, why not listen to his complaints and let him vent? Pray for him as he gets used to the new words.

No matter what the topic, how often do you actually argue with someone over a point and convince them that they’re wrong? How often does someone convince you that you’re wrong?

Be his friend and support him.

It also brings all countries (at least English speaking) back to celebrating the Mass the exact same way. Before, the translation used in the US was not necessarily the same translation used in other English speaking countries. Since we are the Universal Church, it’s comforting to know we are all celebrating with the same words.

You and he can have different opinions and still remain good Catholic friends, ya know. I don’t particularly care for all the changes (although I thought I would) and I am a very conservative Catholic. It is not a sin to not like the new translation. Perhaps it will grow on him, perhaps not. But you really don’t need to try to convince him. It’s not likely to work anyway.

Also, remind him that the Catholic church is not a democratic organization. we don’t vote on things. Get our marching orders and march.

The various organizations that are in schisim with the Church, such as the SSPX should adear to this statement.

I’d say it brings the expression of the mass to a higher caliber, even the weekday mass. After my first “new translation” mass, I found myself thanking the Pope and all the bishops who went to such lengths to accomplish this. I think it’s wonderful. I love it.❤️
Perhaps it will be uncomfortable for some people and definitely a learning effort for everyone. But I’ll wager they’re smiling in heaven about this.🙂 I hope and pray it “grows” on your friend…and everyone else who might be having their reservations about it.

Right we are the universal church so why get rid of the Latin in the first place? Changing the new mass to be more inline with the proper Latin translation is like saying they got it wrong the first time.

NO it is not saying we got it wrong the first time. It say we did it but we can do it better.

and his expertise and authority for his remarks would be . . . ?
just like yours and mine, personal preference.

Encourage him, along with yourself and others who still have questions, to research the biblical basis for each and every word of the Mass, with an expert source like Dr. Edward Sri (which you can see now through EWTN) and most of those questions will be answered and objections resolved.

Maybe you could remind Him that we are a Catholic-universal- church. With a few exceptions we pray the same prayers in one country as we do in another (at Mass). We say the same things. Latin is the official language of the Church. We have been given the gift of hearing and praying in our own tongues. BUT we still must pray together and say the same things. It’s an important part of our universal communion.

Revising our translation gives us the opportunity to say more closely what is being said through out the whole world.

I respectfully disagree. I think they’re saying that they got it wrong the first time. 1+1 is always 2. It doesn’t change over time. The old translation was plenty good enough before and it absolutely is good enough now.

I hate these changes and I’m very upset about them. I want my old Mass back.

My poor wife has had to deal with quite a few rants about this.

.
now you know how us old folks have felt for the last 40 years, I want the old English translation back, namely that of the dialogue Mass, which surprise surprise is almost the same as the current English version.

But the Mas has not changed. The Mass did change in the 60’s and 70’s but this is not a change to the Mass as I posted in respond to you on another thread :

First of all The Mass has not changed so no one has Taken your Mass away.
Second and just a little bit snide here, imagine how a lot of people felt in the 60’s and 70’s when we really did get a whole new Mass.
Third the word to the Mass have not really changed as the Mass was written in Latin to begin with and the Latin has not been changed.
Fourth the English translation that we have had since the 70’s not incorrect, but was not completely true to the Latin and took the English speaking world out of unison with the rest of the world as Most all others were a more direct word for word translation.
Fifth there are some that use the English to translate into their native language and with the English not being a word for word it was further removing those form what the Latin said.

and my last point is found in the Creed the Latin reads
“Visibílium ómnium et invisibílium.”
we used to say this as
" seen and unseen"
we now say
" visible and invisible."

seen and unseen is not the same as visible and invisible. From were I sit in my house house my car is unseen by me however it is not invisible. These little difference in wording are why the new translation had to be done.

lets look at when we used to say I am not worthy to receive you. to me it says I am not worthy to come forward to receive the Eucharist. While this is very true the prayer was a direct reference to the scripture were the Lord healed the servant of the Roman centurion. Matthew 8:8 “And the captain in answer said, Lord, I am not good enough for you to come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be made well.” I makes us look at it is by Christ word and command and our humbly asking that we are healed.

The Italians have an adage that goes “Translator, traitor.”

My Polish-speaking dad taught me as a kid never to get enamored over any translation.

Good advice.
