The Episcopal ordination of Bishop Hugh Gilbert, the former abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Pluscarden, Elgin, took place on the Feast of the Assumption yesterday.

During his first address to the Catholics of Aberdeen as bishop he ‘entrusted’ himself and his new ministry, and Aberdeen diocese, to Our Lady.

Bishop Gilbert was born in England and bapitised into the Church of England. He converted to Catholicism at the age of 18.

I hope these are signs that we will see more of as both bishops and lay people re-discover their faith and seek to integrate it more fully into their lives. Of course as a bishop we’d hope he’d done that already, but from my view here in America, there seems to be a sort of malaise that has crept into Catholicism at it’s highest levels in the British Isles. Perhaps this new batch of prelates will inject some life into their flock.
