Our parish has the new translation, and the priest now says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…”
Why is it “to” the Holy Spirit now?
Why is it “to” the Holy Spirit now?
It’s not the Ghost/Spirit.we’ve always said “Holy Spirit”
I don’t really think it matters to be honest, “ghost/spirit” = same
Probably just a slip of the tongue. Why didn’t you ask the priest? Our parish has the new translation, and the priest now says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…”

It’s most likely just a slip of the tongue, the new translation is still “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”Our parish has the new translation, and the priest now says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…”

Could it be you misheard him?Our parish has the new translation, and the priest now says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…”

Nothing has changed in the new translation concerning the sign of the cross. It is still “and of the Holy Spirit,” which correctly translates the Latin possessive et Spiritus Sancti. Is it possible that he said “and o’ the Holy Spirit,” and that the the “d” of “and,” combined with an unaccented, barely-there “of,” came out sounding like “to” (“an’ to the Holy Spirit”)?Our parish has the new translation, and the priest now says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…”

This is hilarious, arguing over a two-letter preposition. Of course seventeen hundred years ago the argument was over a single letter iota in the middle of an obscure theological term, so not much has changed, has it LOL I guess when it comes to theology, words matter, don’t they.Another possibility is that he frequently prays the Rosary and unintentionally mixed up the Glory Be with the Sign of the Cross.
Is that not what I just stated??Sounds to me like the error “In the name of the Father and of the Son and ***to ***the Holy Spirit” was accidentally carried over from another common prayer similarly worded, “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and ***to ***the Holy Spirit”
Are you saying I said what you said?Is that not what I just stated??
Well, he’s wrong. He may think it’s a new change, but it is not.
- English is his 1st language.
- Not a slip of the tongue. The 1st time I heard it I thought it was. He really emphasises it.
- He gets cranky when people ask him about the things he does differently.
- I’m not upset enough to fight about it like a pp said. He just started doing it recently and I wondered about the significance.
