My dd and new sil have been married a month, and are now taking their last class before college graduation - public speaking. SIL suffers from social anxiety, and his worst fear is public speaking; tomorrow they give their second speech (first one went well) and his anxiety has reached near panic-attack levels. They are trying to get through to his physician to prescribe something to help him deal with this, as he was out of his medication, not having needed it lately.

He is a brilliant student, already accepted to grad school for '09-'10 all the way through to a Ph.D. program in speech pathology, should he so choose, but this one last class (which he attempted once before and dropped) is literally standing between him and a college degree and the rest of his life. DD is understandably very worried about him; she hates public speaking as well, but will get through it.

Please pray for this dear young man who has had very little understanding of his anxiety from his high-achieving parents. He simply MUST get through his speech tomorrow, and then two more. If he doesn’t, his self-esteem will plummet and his anxiety levels will escalate. I am very worried about him.

Thank you.

I will pray to the Holy Spirit for the wisdom and the right words to flow gently from his mouth as he does his speech.

God bless his heart, I will keep him (and your daughter) in my prayers too.

Praying for your SIL and daughter. May the good Lord give him courage and the ability to make it through this class with success…

O Holy Angels grant that I may feel the presence of God on the altar as you are penetrated by it in heaven.
I always said this prayer when I had anxiety attacks.

Praying for your intentions:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

God Bless
In Jesus through Mary

Hi, everyone.

Prayers are still very much needed; SIL had a panic attack today and couldn’t give his speech, though dd gave hers, despite being terribly concerned and worried.

They’ve got to find a way for him to get through this last class…my heart aches for him. I am hoping his teacher is understanding and willing to work something out.

Thanks to all.

I’m quoting myself here, and have an update.

As he has been registered with the office that handles issues for students with disabilities, SIL and DD went to the director of that office yesterday and discovered he may be able to videotape his speeches, while still taking all the tests (he aces all those) and attending the lectures (no problem.) Up to this point, he hasn’t required the “special accommodation” as no class has triggered the anxiety disorder the way public speaking class has.

Please keep praying; if this falls into place, it will mean that when the class ends in less than two weeks, he will - finally, after 7 years - have his degree! (He changed majors several times; excelled at all, couldn’t decide which to stick with.)

Thank you all!

Praying very hard for him. I would recommend for the future that he investigate Toastmasters’ International. They are perfect for a person with this problem. They are used to dealing with people who are terrified of public speaking. I was a member years ago and it helped me tremendously.

My daughter suffers with this as well. She quit her college classes because of this one class.

My prayers are with him and all who suffer with public speaking.

Thank you for all the prayers that were said for my dear new SIL; he and dd went through the office for students with disabilities and discovered that he could videotape his speeches, to be seen by the teacher. He did well on all his tests and class discussions, and completed the class with a good grade. DD, who was very worried about him and also hates public speaking though doesn’t have the same diagnosis of anxiety, hung in there, toughed it out and got an A! They are now both college graduates, with excellent GPAs! Praise God!
I cannot tell you what a huge relief this is, and what a big hurdle has been overcome.

Whew!

Now, if you could say a little prayer that they will find jobs with school systems as either speech/language pathology assistants, or teaching assistants for this year prior to grad school, it would be appreciated. (Right now, ANY jobs that will help them save a little for their Master’s program sounds good to me!)

These intentions will be in my prayers.

*Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, so that in difficult moments we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your Holy Will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen

Father in Jesus’ name please give confidence and calm to this young man. Let him be secure in Your Holy Spirit. Please grant him success.
