New Supporter of Life Needs Our Help

For any of you who don’t know, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, who has up until now been giving grants to Planned Parenthood, just recently announced that it has pulled its funds and will no longer give Planned Parenthood any money. This is such a beautiful victory for life, but unfortunately, Susan G. Komen is being overwhelmed by negative backlash from Planned Parenthood supporters. There are thousands of angry comments on their facebook page, with hundreds of people saying they are no longer going to support Komen and will give their money directly to Planned Parenthood from now on. Many others are saying they have already made a donation to Planned Parenthood just in the last two days, to spite Komen.

If you haven’t already, please join me in sending a thank you, and if you want, a donation to Susan G. Komen, to help them be courageous in the face of so much hostility. Let’s flood their Facebook wall with positivity and encouragement and show the world that there are many, many people who love and support all life!

I’m not sure they’re a great charity just because they split from Planned Parenthood.

There are some other pretty serious ethical issues.

They partnered with KFC (yes, fried chicken) to “pink wash” their buckets. (“Buckets for a cure!”) Obesity has a link to cancer.

They’ve promoted perfume (Promise Me) with known toxins

Galaxolide is a synthetic musk that works as a hormone disruptor and has been detected in blood, breast milk, and even newborns.
Toluene is a potent neurotoxicant linked to a variety of demonstrated negative health effects and is widely known as one of the toxic trio. Toluene is banned by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).

They over-promote mammograms. There is some question about how effective they are and at what point they become excessive.

They sue other charities that use the word “cure.”

They also promote alternative health practices such as Ayurveda, Qi Gong, Yoga and other “spiritual” exercises. (ww5.komen.org/BreastCancer/ComplementaryTherapies.html)

I am trying to post on their FB page but it’s somewhat jammed…over 9,000 replies on one status. I sent them an email yesterday, we should all try to contribute, even if it’s small. They are doing the right thing.

I agree with most of this. I actually commented on a blog yesterday outlining almost all these points.

I also read an article last night on lifesitenews that they had cut funding to embryonic stem cell research not too long ago, and that they have a new exec who’s pro-life.

And when they are promoting unhealthy and even dangerous practices… they’re NOT being supportive of health.

That is like saying a well known clinic that has stopped doing abortions but still provides contraception should be supported over the little lesser known (but still major) clinic in the area that does NOT support abortion or contraception.

Why would you chose to support the first over the second?

I agree. If we say nothing, and all they hear is complaints about this decision, they are more likely to take another step in the wrong direction again. They need to know that people support and appreciate *this particular *decision. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” We need to support those organizations that start to make decisions that are more aligned to promoting a culture of life. If someone still doesn’t want to donate to Komen, that is their choice by all means. But it’s also important to let the organization know that we appreciate their willingness to begin making life-saving moves. We can’t expect the entire organization to change overnight–we have to applaud their little successes in order to encourage more changes down the road.

Also, anything that HURTS Planned Parenthood’s bottom line (killing babies) is A-OK with me! It’s not that I love Komen so much, it’s that I detest PP so much!

They stopped financially supporting an organization that kills hundreds of thousands of unborn babies. That is amazing and enormously courageous. I am going to applaud their efforts even if they do endorse fried chicken or perfume or yoga. Sheesh. I don’t think they should only see backlash for this. And if we lead the way with a show of public support, other organizations may follow. Let’s set a precedent of support for helping to reduce the killing of unborn babies!

I have trouble supporting a foundation that stops giving to planned parenthood, ONLY because planned parenthood is under federal investigation. Courageous is not a word I would use for the Komen foundation. And yet I see God’s hand in all of this. They have taken the right step,let us pray they continue upon that path.

It is not ONLY that. Recently, they were putting out a Bible with the ribbon on the cover, and pro-life Christians got it pulled and they stopped production. This was a shock to many, including some within Komen itself. Komen is having to recognize that a good percentage of their funding base is also pro-life. Yes, it is God’s hand. Yes, we should pray. Perhaps they will also look into the connection between abortion and breast cancer. Maybe one day, they will be a truly pro-life organization. God can do miracles!

I buy nothing, with a pink ribbon on it, from the Komen foundation!! I also shout that from the rooftop to all of my friends or anyone in ear shot. Always beware of wolves in sheeps clothing!!

Every dollar you spend towards a charity that promotes ill health is a dollar you could spend to a charity that aligns with your mission.

If your mission is simply to destroy PP, then it makes sense to donate to other groups that are doing this.

If your mission is actual promotion of health, then it doesn’t make sense to ignore all the bad. If you donate a dollar to a clinic that gives contraception and to a clinic that doesn’t, why not just give both dollars to the clinic that actually aligns with your view?

I’m not sure I am a big fan of SGK, but I am a fan of what they just did (and if you read about it, they are simply following their policy of not conrtibuting to organizations under investigation, but that is not how the vast majority of people are seeing it).

SGK has not just stopped funding PP because it’s under investigation; it is a permanent change… SGK has changed its policy to only fund programs with direct outcomes, and this eliminates PP because PP does not provide mammograms, only referrals for them. See this article:

Also, the new vice president of SGK is strongly pro-life, so I’m sure she had something to do with this policy change.

I’m not sure how I feel about SGK as a whole, but I am very happy and supportive of their decision to defund PP and not support embryonic stem-cell research. This move is incredibly courageous in the face of such strong opposition and loss of donations from pro-choice individuals. It has really surprised me and made me sad that there are thousands of hateful comments on their FB page just because of this decision. I guess I didn’t realize how many supporters of PP there were…

Health is one thing. Organizations that put money towards killing unborn children is another.
