There had been no bishops in Sweden in hundreds of years, since the Protestant Reformation, until 1977. Now the second bishop the country has had since the Reformation, the bishop of Stockholm, though there are now only 150,000 Catholics in the country, has been made a cardinal.
I am delighted for his elevation, which occurs in the aftermath of the Holy Father’s pilgrimage to Lund to there inaugurate our joint commemoration of the Reformation. It comes also in the wake of the canonisation of Elisabeth Hesselblad, Sweden’s newest saint, a figure of recent Church history.

This is a very special time for Sweden.

It is also a great blessing for the Church for one and all to focus on the peripheries.

I don’t know what all that means (peripheries) but I’m happy for Sweden. Let us all pray for our church everywhere… :gopray2:

I’m so happy to see that Pope Francis has been appointing cardinals from more outlying countries. I think he sees this will better reflect the universality of the Church and those bishops elevated to cardinal will be better disposed to serve their flock. Last I heard there has been a strong growth of Religious in Sweden, long known for being highly secular. I hope this man of God will be able to do great things for Sweden.

Although, I’m not really sure what being a cardinal entails other than elections.
