New to TLM and facing a dilemma

Right…but it boils down to is… Some of us feel that only a priest should be allowed to touch the precious body and blood of Jesus. It hurts us to feel that we are being “forced” to be disrespectful to Our Lord and to take communion in our hand. We were taught that only a priest, who has received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and has consecrated himself to God’s service alone has the privilege of handling the Eucharist. That is why it is bothersome. For those of you who have not gone through this training…it obviously does not affect you in the same way.

I have heard of new ways of teaching, that don’t teach mortification, don’t teach penance, don’t teach the need for confession, etc… This new teaching has produced Catholics that more easily accept handling the Eucharist, and receiving the Eucharist from Lay people…but for those of us over 50, and Catholic School trained… This is very difficult for many of us. Some of us will never accept it.

I** needed to point that out. The SSPX also feel this way and they are teaching their followers this same thing…the old way, the way I was taught as a child. This is the traditional way. **I think this is the dilemma…
Incidently, I was not the first to bring up the SSPX. The traditional way is to obey the pope.
then pray for the changes you would like to see. NOT go out of the church and start doing iton your own. Luther did that also.

Hi all,

I hope you can help me with this problem.

I have recently started attending TLM and found it challenging but worth it. I want to attend often but at the same time I want to stay connected to my parish where I am involved in some activities and care about that very much. TLM has changed my understanding of the Mass and I have changed my attitude towards what it means to actively participate, and also about the role of lay people in liturgy. I try to avoid taking communion form EMHC when I’m at my parish because it doesn’t seem right. This leads me to my dilemma. I sometimes read at Mass. Should I cease to do so? Is it a contradiction to read at Mass but not take communion from lay people? I’m very much inclined to stop doing readings at Mass but would appreciate your thoughts before making a decision.

Thank you!
Although there is nothing wrong (per se) with receiving communion from an EMHC, if you feel uncomfortable doing so, there is also nothing wrong with making sure you’re sitting where you can get in the line to receive communion from the priest. This is what I do. I know that I can receive from EMCH’s or the priest, but I prefer receiving from the priest. Simple as that. You don’t have to cease being a Lector just because you assist an Extraorinary Form Mass at times. However, if it interferes with your duties as a Lector, you might want to stop doing it.

Auntie M,

excuse me, but who is leaving the church and doing their own thing? Perhaps you have misunderstood the issues raised here.
All who have posted comments, me included, are obviously faithful to the church and the Holy Father. The Traditional Mass is not illegal, against the rules or whatever. It should not be a controversial issue but for some crazy reason there are many members of the clergy who are against it. But that does not make us some underground movement with secret handshakes and passwords. The pope himself wants it celebrated in all parishes! (His words.)

Perhaps you can supply a link to where Pope Benedict XVI himself actually states that he wants the EF celebrated in all parishes or, failing that, an official Vatican statement.

Aren’t there any Traditional Latin Masses in the LA area?

Could you please tell us “what” section of church law you are referring to? (chapter and paragraph, please)

The Pope has declared their ministry, and I quote, “not licit”. That means illegal.** Licit=legal===if it is not licit**–then it is illegal.
By the lifting of the excommunication, they can now go to confession and get absolved. BUT, as far as I know, this has not happened. This means they are still outside the church. Not **fully reconciled **means not reconciled.
As the bible says, (paraphasing) you can’t straddle the fence. It’s all or nothing.

It is people who keep bragging about this group that keeps the church in an argument. Listen to the Pope, when he says they have no ministry within the church, how can anyone say that they do?

If we as Catholics are to call the Pope, “the Vicar of Christ” then he is Christ’s representative. If he is to represent Christ, who are we to stand AGAINST Christ?
Sounds very scarry to me.
I am going to give you Bishop Fellay’s document in which he explains the Canon Laws and Laws of God he and the Society of St. Pius are acting on. He also explains it so that we can understand…

Play close attention to these sections:
“Authentic Obedience”
“Authority from God”
“About Excomunications”

This is why I say…Pray my brothers and sisters, for our Holy Pope, for all priests and for the SSPX. For from our priests and bishops and our Holy Father come leadership in our holy Church. Our holy church is UNDER ATTACK BY THE DEVIL HIMSELF. Pray to St. Michael everyday. Please join me.

Maybe someone could refresh my memory…Was it Bishop Felley or Bishop Williamson (you know the Holocoust denier) that said women should not be educated?

For those of you who are really interested in what the SSPX is concerned about.

Oh thank you, this just verifies what I’ve been saying. They make it “sound” so true. BUT in reality, the NO does NOT make the mass sound or appear anything like a “MEAL” It is the consecration and no one can honestly tell the truth when they say it is something else.

Maybe Bishop Felley would do a better job if he went to a NO mass, at least he would know what he is talking about. The “Novus Ordo, the new mass” is nothing at all like what he is describing. It has never been a “meal”, it is always presented as a “sacrifice”. With the word “sacrifice” coming straight out of the priests’ own mouth. How much clearer can that be?

Where do they get this sort of misinformation? Surely they wouldn’t just make it up.

Do we all really believe that you can only face east when talking with our Lord? This is just symbolic of His second coming. I really think most people who believe He is omnipotent, actually believe he can be everywhere at anytime, and everywhere at all times.

Does anyone REALLY believe if the priest doesn’t face the altar, that no one there will go to heaven?

Go to a Novus Ordo mass and LISTEN to what the priest says…You might get the proverbial “light bulb”🙂

When I read this, I was hoping, trully, to find ACTUAL Canon Law. What I found was Felley giving his opinion with a “he said, he heard, or he thought” type of “explanation”. This is hardly True Canon Law.

But he really makes a good “we are the victim” representation. a “We will fight till the end” type of motivational speech. Sorry, but that is all I got from this article.

The Pope didn’t say it “himself” - you’ll just have to take the word of one of his Princes.
The poster of whom I asked the question unequivocally stated that the Pope himself said that he wanted the EF celebrated in every parish. That was not true and he/she has no business making that claim. I am well aware of that article from the Catholic Herald and no, I do not have to take the word of the journalist who wrote it or whatever comment any Cardinal might throw out at the spur of the moment. There is nothing either from Pope Benedict himself ( whose word is the only one that counts) or from a direct official Vatican Congregation carrying the Vatican letterhead to support the claim. A newspaper article just doesn’t cut it, no matter how much you would like to make it so! I just don’t understand how people who style themselves as “traditional” Catholics on this forum so often think nothing of playing fast and loose with the truth.

Well, I read the canon law about 3 months ago…and I haven’t found it again…sorry. When I do, I will get it to you.

Oh dear, what is this all about? Never heard of anything so…uninformed. This thread has lost its point it seems. I have got enough material to think about my dilemma and that is enough for me.

I will try to fish out that statement about the pope. Perhaps I am naive, but even if it was a case of his spokesperson who said it I tent to take it to be true.

An article in the January 2009 “Homiletic & Pastoral Review” describes the author’s reasons for preferring the TLM, and his gratitude for Pope Benedicts “Summorum Pontificum.” It concludes by saying that the Pope has reminded us that both forms of the Mass “belong to us; to reject either is foolish and ungrateful.”

So: if one attends a NO Mass, then he should participate without reservation. I attend them as seldom as possible but have no doubt about the validity of the Eucharist.

Parish affiliation is a problem; there are at least these two solutions: a Latin Mass offered in your parish, or the establishment of a Latin Mass parish. In my diocese we now have a TLM parish and a priest from the FSSP. I am very grateful. It took a long time and much prayer. You might see if there are enough people interested in such a parish where you live, and begin discussions with the bishop.

I understand many priests are now learning to say the TLM. So far I know of no parishes which offer both rites, but it may well come to pass. The Pope seemed to have such arrangements in mind.

Best wishes,

Hi James,

thanks for your reply. The TLM I’ve started to attend is FSSP.
Very good point about having no reservations at NO. I’ve reached a point when many things have started to bother me and I keep finding faults. It’s not the best frame of mind to have at any Mass.

Our Holy Father has said their priests have NO MINISTRY within our church. Which means they are not authorized to be giving the Eucharist. (and there are those who say that taking in the hand is not reverent! What is reverent about taking from a illegal priest?
an “illegal” touching the body of our Lord?)

When a “pastor” represents himself as a Roman Catholic priest and says mass when the POPE himself says that he isn’t legal, what or maybe I should say who do you listen to?
You’re including all of the Eastern Orthodox Churches too, right?

Maybe someone could refresh my memory…Was it Bishop Felley or Bishop Williamson (you know the Holocoust denier) that said women should not be educated?
Neither said this in the manner you’re implying and you do quite an injustice in maligning these Bishops with your falsehoods.
