Oh, great. The “Pope Joan” thing again.

REELZCHANNEL? I’ve never heard of that before. And it’s no wonder with a name like REELZCHANNEL. What were their corporate branding people thinking? That Z for S substitution in the middle of two words slammed together is just painful to think about.

But back to the story . . .

(Albuquerque, NM) Tuesday, November 22, 2011—REELZCHANNEL—TV About Movies® today announced the two-part miniseries “Pope Joan” will make its U.S. television premiere on REELZ starting Sunday, December 18, 2011 with part 1 airing at 8pm ET and at 8pm PT. “Pope Joan” is the legend that will not die—a sweeping historical drama about a woman whose existence has been denied for a thousand years.

Uh . . . that would be because she never existed. People tend to deny the existence of things that never existed.

Why do I think Dan Brown’s name will be somewhere in the credits.
 
According to the press release, Pope Joan is a German-Italian-Spanish mini-series produced in 2009. It is four hours long.

Reelzchannel, a digital cable channel which potentially reaches 60 million viewers, made news earlier this year when it agreed to run a series on the Kennedy’s. Even the History Channel turned down the series because it contained too many factual errors and exaggerations.

Wow, when the History Channel turns down a sensationalistic program because the program is inaccurate, that is saying something. And it says something about the standards of ReelzChannel that they would agree to run it.

Perhaps the same could be said regarding this new European film about Pope Joan
 
I remember this story…she was the pope until she gave birth in a public place…kind of put an end to her pontificate… 😦

Could be true…there was a lot of corruption having to do with the seat of the Holy Father and the Vatican over 2000 years…but I’m sure it will be sensational…a bit of a conversation starter…but I think we will dismiss it and move on…unless the evidence is overwhelming…and I don’t think it is…

No, its not true. Ask a papal historian
 
It is impossible to validly ordain a woman. Therefore, even if there ever was a woman named Joan who claimed to be the pontiff, there never really was a female pontiff.

Yeah, I don’t think that anyone could really believe that there was a female pope…quite an accomplishmenton so many levels if it were true…but strnager things have happened…not a faith shaking event…

Well setting aside the topic of women priests…there may have been a woman who sat on the throne of peter…but as one observer said…since only men can be created priest therefore popes, then no woman could of been created pope…but a woman might have dressed up as a pope and understood to be male…to quote Captain Kirk…is that weird “or what”?

Popes did not have to be priests either, a pope could be any Catholic man that the Holy Spirit led the cardinals to vote for…so the papacy is a living organic thing and that is why it is so fascinating to people…

If there really was a female Pope (which of course there was not), then that would indeed constitute a faith shaking event.

You are assuming that God would allow a person to falsely rise to the level of the Chair of Peter, which is the office of the Vicar of Christ. Sorry, but God promised that the gates of hades would not prevail…

Good point Irish Catholic…I agree…I don’t think a woman as pope would be tantamount ot “the gate of hade”…but I get your point…and that was my point…that a woman might have decieved all around her portrayed hersefl as a man and a priest and therefore could of fooled her way in - but your right that is withina pure human set of rules…I personally don’t believe in a Pope Joan…but it makes a wonderful story as does the Holy Grail stuff…

The only annoying thing about this show is that it makes it harder to put this old dog to sleep. We have to keep hearing about it. . . . . and it gets so . . . . . . . old. . . . .

While I reject the Pope Joan story as a complete fabrication, your logic falls a bit short. We’ve had some popes that, while male, were absolutely evil men. If God did not act to keep them out of office, why would we expect Him to keep a woman out? I wish He would have but He, in His wisdom and sovereignty, chose not to.

Considering what passes for education these days, it’s not surprising. It’s also a great conspiracy theory. The thing about conspiracy theories is that the more evidence you provide to deny them, the more the proponents believe the theory. Add to this the fact that anti-Catholicism is on the rise and people are willing to believe anything that “proves” the Church to be evil or hypocritical.
